Magic Tricks

Solo by Michael James

It’s 52 against one. Beat the odds. Discover Solo.

It all started in 2008 when Michael James began to develop card flourishes. In a world that is overflowing with extra long dribbles and unnatural geometric displays, Michael favors a classic approach where fluid and expressive motions are top priority in a card flourish. That is what you’ll find in Solo: Ten unique flourishes that demonstrate smoothness and articulation above anything else.

One of the most comprehensive cardistry projects ever produced.

A production that started nearly eight months ago has in fact been in the works for four years. Michael's style is inspired by card mavericks Brian Tudor, the Buck Twins, and Kevin Ho. These aren’t cuts you’re going to learn and forget in a day. Each cut is vastly different from the other, giving you a diverse collection that will broaden your arsenal.

Solo is divided into three categories: Signature Flourishes, Bonus Collection, and Special Features. It contains over 90 minutes of cardistry training.

In the Signature Flourishes section, you'll find ten unique flourishes: Arriflex, Ekklesia, Collective, Elysium, Twistor, Tidalwave, Reich, Reinvention, Mysterium, and Zero. Nine of the flourishes are two-handed cuts and one flourish is a single card flourish. Each flourish includes an introduction, performance, verbal explanation, and slow movement performance.

The Bonus Collection includes four bonus moves: Upload, Skydive, Whirlpool, and Elite. These are short, simple flourishes designed to perform on the fly. Each move contains a performance, overview, and verbal explanation.

We made a conscious effort to include as much special features as possible. What's included: Original Trailer, Seamless Motion, Jikh and James, Rediscover Identity, Solo Outtakes, Interview with Michael James, and Credits with anamorphic footage.

What about Project One?

Michael published some of his ideas in an EP-like production called Project One. While he retained some of the cuts and ideas from Project One, you’re going to find a lot of new cuts and concepts that are exclusive to Solo. Overall, it’s a completely new and fresh experience.

Wow. Magnificent, Astonishing, Just Fricking Brilliant!

On this DVD Michael James teaches 10 stylish, smooth and visually appealing original flourishes, as well as 4 bonus moves. As some of you may remember Michael released some flourishes in a previous project called Project One. He has retained some of these flourishes in this production, but don't worry, there's more than enough new material in there to keep you busy for a really long time! Let's go into some details about these flourishes:-

Elysium- This flourish is smooth, flashy and eye- catching. It's a single card rotating on a packet, around your hand, replaced back on the packet, then another card is stripped and before you know it there's an awesome 3 packet display in front of you.

Arriflex- This flourish was inspired by Kevin Ho. It's long, complicated, and looks really cool. There's so much going on it's mind blowing.

Mysterium- Short, spinny, and stylish. It's got a unique opener which is interesting to experiment with.

Reinvention- Originally a variation of Molecule 3 by the Bucks, but totally and completely different. It has a theme of a card being stripped from a rotating packet, replaced and repeated. Elegant.

Collective- A huge 6 packet display, with a 'flarey' closer. Really fun to do.

Reich- Cool name, cool flourish. Spins, rotations, and an aerial closer. Awesome.

Zero- Inspired by Chris Webber. Really fast, nice rhythm, just plain cool!

Tidalwave- Based on Ashford Kneitel's Tornado flourish. Basically James' version of Mockingbird or Pandora.

Ekklesia- Micheal's all time signature flourish. Fast, smooth, so appealing to the eye. Awesomeness isn't as awesome as this.

Twistor- A one card flourish, quite nice, but not the best. You might think differently.

Bonus moves:-

Elite- Based on Elysium, quick and addicting.

Whirlpool- This is the best flourish off the DVD, and also my all time favorite move! Michael really doesn't do it justice by putting it in the bonus section. It's quick, addicting, and looks damn great!

Skydive- A fast, flashy, easy to do aerial flourish. Michael's version of the Bucks' Dropzone cut.

Upload- The ending of Ekklessia as a quick flourish. Not bad.

The teaching on this DVD is great. Explained verbally, and shown in slow motion which makes everything easy to understand. There's also an extra clip of the flourish being done in slow motion, which I really admire. As well as teaching the move Michael gives a brief introduction which is quite interesting.

There are many special features including; Cardistry performance videos (featuring Andrei Jikh), an interview, and Outtakes. So much entertainment is packed into this DVD.

The most outstanding thing about this DVD is the Cinematography. The Theory11 crew has done an exceptional job of making a simple Cardistry instructional video look like a Christopher Nolan film. Editing is amazing, quality is great, nothing can be faulted.

This has taken Cardistry and Cinematography to another level. BUY IT RIGHT NOW... you won't regret a thing. Good job Theory11, and thank you for this!

Real great stuff. Hard for me because I am a real newbie to cardistry. But the way it is explained and the final slow-mo is so great. And specifically the way it is shot from the point of view of the perfumer so that you know how it looks from your point of view and that way you know exactly how to do it. TIP: make sure that you really wanna put the time and effort into learning this. It is not easy and you need to put some hours of practice. So if you are looking for something quick to learn then don't buy it. It is not for you.

Beautiful work. Buy it now.

I just bought the download and watched the special features as my dry hands aren't ready for hardcore practice just yet. Solo satisfies my long time craving for the synergy of elegant cardistry with the cinematography of Andrew Blake.

There isn't one flourish in the 10 that I don't want to learn. They are all top of the line moves in a style that is so dynamic and flashy that I can't stop drooling on my keyboard. I'm expecting to have to put some serious time in to getting these down but the production of the videos is so good that it's easy to see how the moves work. Michael James is as good as it gets. If you want to learn pro flourishes, here they are. I can't believe I got so much for my money.

Just got this and I have to say WOW. Michael's style of flourishing suits me perfectly. I started on the Dan & Dave style packet cuts back in the day. This is going to freshen-up my downtime chilling with a deck of cards. I've been slightly disappointed that cardistry is going towards the 'build a shape with your deck' or make a giant fan style. Thankfully this DVD has brought something fresh to the community and is jam-packed with packet cuts that will entertain you for hours. If you haven't added this to your cart.....you're probably De'vo.

Solo is simply stunning! The cinematography is amazing, the locations are breathtaking, and of course the flourishes are creative, stylish and beautiful. My personal favorites are Arriflex, Zero, and Elysium. The explanations are split into two sections, which are a verbal walkthrough and a slow no words walkthrough. Both are very clear and helpful. The only aspect that I was disappointed about though was that the instant download (For macs at least) was a little unorganized. The whole download comes in a folder and inside are other multiple folders. In each are an introduction, a performance, and an explanation of a flourish. I just wish it had a little bit of a better format, but all in all it is the best cardistry project I have ever experienced. Great job T11!
