How did you first get started in magic?

A cousin of mine was leaving for the navy and left me some of his books.The only one that stood out was Mark wilsons complete course in magic.I read through a bit and asked my mom to take me to the magic shop but she said no not until you learn the whole book and well i didn't learn the whole thing but she saw how much effort i put into trying she finally took me and the rest is history.
