- Years in Magic
Rick Lax wrote the books FOOL ME ONCE, I GET PAID FOR THIS, and LAWYER BOY. He studied political science and then law. (Graduated law school and passed the bar, though never practiced law.) He plays the piano and plays poker. Oh, magic, too.
Lax created the effects DETACH and VERTIGO, both of which received high praise in MAGIC magazine. He also created FORTUITY, ALTERNATE UNIVERSE, and HIGHRISE.
More on the way.
How did you first get started in magic?
My grandparents had a great collection of David Copperfield magic tapes. Would watch them again and again. And I just got hooked.
Which artists have inspired you the most in your work thus far?
Derrenn Brown, Guy Hollingworth, Penn & Teller
What is your creative process - how do you come up with new effects and ideas?
I've been averaging a trick a week. They just come to me. I see an object and my mind thinks, "What would be a magical application of this object?" Then, after the initial idea, the development can take anywhere from a week to two years. Depends on the trick.
What advice would you give to new performers just starting today?
Work on your communication skills. Maybe take an acting class or a speaking class. And don't be afraid of feedback. I find that the best magicians are the ones who solicit criticism the most; the worst magicians are the ones who collapse or get defensive at the slightest critique.
