Years in Magic

Hi, my name is Xabi and I'm from Donostia (located in the Basque Country, what a wonderful place!).

I started to do magic when I was 4. A few years later, I discovered some websites (including t11) and I started to learn 'professional' magic. Since then (2007), I've been very interested in creating effects, and I'm really looking forward to share my ideas with you!

Which artists have inspired you the most in your work thus far?

I would say that my favorite magician, and the one that has inspired me most is Daniel Garcia, his simple and direct magic is simply awesome.

However I've learned a lot from many other magicians, such as Tamariz, Dani DaOrtiz, Lennart Green, René Lavand... I really love Luis Piedrahita's style too. If you don't know him, be sure to check his work in coin magic.

But there's one more thing... I have been inspired a lot with music and films! Lots of Coldplay and Florence + the Machine albums and even more Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino movies! Don't limit yourself to magic – I learned that the hard way.

What advice would you give to new performers just starting today?

Don't try to learn a lot of effects. Focus on the tricks and sleights that you really like, practice a lot and perform them as much as you can.

And please, read. Downloads and DVDs with specific tricks you want to learn are great for you to improve, but the knowledge you can obtain from books is really huge. I'd say that combining videos with literature is the best option!

How did you first get started in magic?

I was 4 (four!) when I bought my first ever magic effect: the thumb tip with a red light. I was on vacation in Barcelona and found a guy selling those on the streets. I've loved magic since that very moment.
