I just saw db performing compression on youtube and was wondering if it uses a gimmick ?

There is no gimmick. Nothing but your hands and the cards. As noted by myself and another member here in a separate thread, this principle (the inflated deck) was published by Lin Searles in 1938 in his book THE CARD EXPERT.

You will also find some very cool applications of this concept in David Harkey's SIMPLY HARKEY which was published in the early 1990s.
