The Weekly Debate: #3

First, I would like to tell you the nameof last weeks lucky Great Debater. So here you go. Good job... RANDOMWRATH. You did a good job of arguing and debating with others.
**********************************************

So There are many veiws on this subject and I was so happy when someone sent this idea over to me. I feel that it will raise some good discussion and hopefully some good debating.

So some people tend to think that magic is progressing faster than ever, others think it is progressing gradually. But even some people still think that we are heading in a downward spiral. So here is the brand new debate question...

"WHERE DO YOU FEEL MAGIC IS HEADING AS A WHOLE?" - submitted by magicman384

Have fun...

Do you have an idea for a Weekly Debate Question? Then PM it to me and I will glady post it as a topic as long as it is appropriate.

I think that this is quite an interesting question and I think it has many ups and downs. For example, more magicians are starting to rely on gimmicks opposed to pure sleight of hand. I feel that these are large gaps in magic. However, some new sleights and gimmicks are being designed that are simply great and are moving us forward. So the way I see it we are moving up at a gradual pace but that could change all in one second.

To steer offtopic a bit- but isnt this a shortened version of Cerca Trova?

As mentioned in the "Return of The Weekly Debates" thread... yes it sort of is. Except for one difference. At any time you may go back to any weekly debate and add your thoughts. They don't get locked after one week. So, anyway please feel free to argue on this weeks question.

I believe magic, to the layman, will always have it's ups a downs. Magic has seen its "Golden days" many times throughout history, but it always comes right before a magic drought if you would. Look at the 70's, magic flourished both close up and stage alike. Everyone's interest was peeked by either watching the many magicians on late night television or watching the charm of the legendary Doug Henning. However after the 70's magic experienced a serious drought through the 80's and 90's. We are just now seeing magic come back into the limelight. We have entered another "golden age" of magic.

You can thank Mr. Blaine, Mr. Angel, or perhaps even The Prestige and The Illusionist, whoever is to thank we HAVE in fact reached another golden age, the only question is how long will this interest remain? We have shows like "believe" which are immediately extinguishing the interest in magic. I would like to see this age last as long as possible, but I believe another drought is inevitable.

But these threads always die in like, two days. Do you seriously think that this will stay live for more that a week? Besides, there have been many threads, posts, and discussions about this before. You're just dragging up an old topic that we are all sick and tired of.

So this weekly debate has turned into a debate on whether or not we should have weekly debates? That's ridiculous, some of us enjoy the weekly debates, for those of you who don't, it's not like these debates hurt or affect you in any way. Leave it be.

Magic is going through an interesting time - because of technology - magic METHODS are far easier to learn, which starts to create a dicotomy of magicians. Those that want to learn magic as one would learn music to be in a band or be considered good at it and those that want to learn magic and fool people/fiddle with it. However, unlike someone that "fiddles" with a music instrument, the people that are "educating" themselves on magic are learning from LIMITED or UNRELIABLE sources.

Unreliable sources - Youtube, friends, forums, for example.

Limited sources - Internet magic sales companys...like, yep, T11 (sorry) but the focus is on their magic, not all that is avaialble, or what will give you a solid foundation (although, I find Theory 11 better than many)

Because of this dicotomy in magic "learners", it creates many problems - like, the misnaming of tricks, the expectation to learn methods so easily as if it is unimportant, and the focus on "street magic" versus magic as entertainment.

However, this isn't new - just the focus on what is being presented is new - magic has always had a small percentage that want to be good...and a large percentage that were okay...and somewhere in the middle of the two exist the uniformed and poor quality magicians.

So - the biggest changes are the lack of respect that exist in learning magic in various forms, from illegal downloads to expecting the solution as soon as you see an effect - so boldy asking like you DESERVE the knowledge...rather than old school thinking of - the method is a gift...and more cherished.

Still - the biggest direction magic is heading in is the: "eveyrthing visual is better" style - and I think this is different than in the past - where people understood the effect happened in the mind, and - in a horror movie analogy - the monster in our mind is always more terrfying than the one you can actually see. With our ADHD riddled minds, everything has to happen right away, or we lose interest - so it seems that this focus on visual magic is so important to appease the crowds.

However - to finally answer the question in full - I see magic having a pendulum swing back to the middle, where construction of effects are important and visual and implied magic become more of a hot topic - on when and where to use certain phases - ie. Should a three phased effect start visual and end with implied, or vice versa?

Magic is becoming more main stream - but I am not so sure it's good for magic - I mean...nobody ever says "magic sells"...but SEX does...and even though more porn stars are crossing over, they are still type cast - Please tell me I am not the only one that saw Jenna J in her main stream movie - ZOMBIE STRIPPERS? Brutal! I would love to see a small swing the other way for magic popularity, but...going full circle...with technology allowing everything to be universal and blown up and over 1 000 000 000 internet devices existing the world - I don't see magic "hiding out" anytime soon.

If anything - this gives us a bigger reason to live the magicians oath and keep the secrets, practice our magic - and become a tight knit group....instead of constantly arguing in forums...but that is another post, that may answer the same question.

I do agree with you joshua about this question. It has been brought up before in an opinionative thread. I like these debated because it gives everyone a chance to debate and argue there ideas without looking like a jerk for attacking someone else's opinion.

I don't see magic as strong as it used to be but i'm glad that there are people that move us all forward, as a unit.

Some time ago, magic flourished because of the Professor, Fred Kaps, Marlo and many many other fantastic performers. People that contribute to magic, rather than just make a quick buck. Magic was very much about respect.

I do think T11 has influenced my views on magic and respect IN magic. I learned to embrace younger magicians and never forget the past visionaries. I hope other members have also benefited from these forums.

I think magic has extremely increased in popularity ever since criss angel and david blaine, however the community seems to be a bit less friendly and accepting than it used to be back in the day. However magic is still all of our passions and i wouldnt want to do anything else
