How hard is it to become a casino dealer? This may be short sighted of me, but I can't think the job itself would actually be too difficult right? Do some shuffles, deal from the left, sit on 16 and above, that kind of thing right? Obviously just about all of us are adept at handling cards, does anyone have any experience?

You better know the game pretty darn well and keep it moving fast pace. You also need to know lots of strategy because first time players are going to ask you "What's the Book Say to Do?" You should read "said" book on Black Jack.

I will tell you right now you better be pretty darn good at entertaining as well. They want people who can keep players at the table. I was in Vegas with friends last year and a dealer can make or break the experience at a table. We had some horrible ones and some awesome ones. We even had ones that we just got up and walked away from the table because they could have cared less we were even playing. The best ones are high fiving you....rooting for you....helping you out when you need it....etc.

I'm from Mississippi and I know that there is some sort of certification that is required before you can get a job... That's the way it is here so I'm assuming it's like that everywhere. You actually take classes on dealing technique, rules and standards, etc. To become certified.

Being a casino dealer is really repetitive and the novelty wears off after a few months. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. There are more games to Blackjack which are more complicated and I'm sure most casinos train you before you are allowed to deal the game.

As Rick said, you must be entertaining and have people skills. You want to give the customers the best experience possible that would make them want to come back.

However, there are some downsides to the job. Most shifts are usually 8 hours or 10 hours on a rotating roster. What that means is that you could be rostered on to start work at 4am in the morning and finishing at midday. Or maybe you could be starting your shift at 8pm and finishing at 4pm. It will definitely affect your sleeping pattern which isn't good for overall health. Also, when customers lose, some will tend to vent their frustration out at the dealer. There might be some hurtful comments made by them which you shouldn't take to heart.

I've been a dealer for two years and it's been a pretty enjoyable job. I'm not sure about the States, but there is a certain license you must get to become a dealer in Australia.

I was a dealer for a few years and The way i got in was i started as a cashier in another part of the casino
and asked to be put on the list for dealer school, it was a long wait because there was a few hundred people before
me. now keep in mind not everyone who goes to the school is going to pass there is a lot of games you need to learn
alot of rules there are of things that MUST be done a certain way from the way you handle cash, chips, cards. i do not
know were you live but here in California i would suggest getting a job as a cashier or chip runner first because its rare they
hire dealers off the streets. and another thing be sure you have a clean background or you are not getting past the gaming commission.

There are a lot of games in the casino. A ton of rules to learn and guidelines to follow. It goes far more than being able to handle a deck of cards smoothly.
As for having a good personality; it's good but probably not required. I went to Atlantic City and most of the dealers seemed rude and just angry. I'm not sure what their deal was . . .(see what I did there :p).

This was a path I could have followed, but later decided it wasn't for me.
