What would you recommend? I'm planning on picking up royal road and expert card technique as well.

If this is your first time learning from books, those are fine options. Don't rush through it! Really absorb and master the fundamentals even if they seem real trivial at first. There are a lot of classic effects in that book: Ambitious Card, Tipsy Trick, Card to Pocket, Cards Across, Conus Aces. You'll want to rush through everything at first which is fine, but go back and really master them. They may not seem like the most powerful magic you've ever seen, but your card handling in general will improve tremendously.

In the first couple chapters you will learn an impromptu effect that regularly fools magicians in Royal Road. I hope you enjoy it! If you could do everything in just that book you would be better than 80% of all magicians!
