Well, are you planning on making a career out of magic? If so, keep it up! You never know where it might lead. Of course, you'll have to do a lot of hard work. But, if it's not worth working for...it's not worth having.

Are you just doing it for enjoyment? (Much like myself)

If you are, then still...keep doing it if you love it. I mean, from what I can tell, your parents just seem to be a bit uneasy about it. I've heard of many magicians having parents that seemed a bit paranoid that their children/child was going to waste all of their money on magic and not go out and make something of themselves.

Listen...

If you don't want to make a career out of magic, just do the things to show your parents that you are just doing it for enjoyment. Keep your school work up, and take care of business first. If you do that, your parents should see right away what your intentions are in life.

If all else fails, have a nice long heart to heart talk with them.

Krash made some excellent points. The choice is totally yours. Don't let other people try to stop you from doing what you love to do.

True, magic is a difficult profession to make it in, and it won't help with much of anything else, but if you keep magic as a hobby it is a great way to make some extra cash and keep going. If I'm down, I go to magic and I feel better, knowing that I have something that will always be mine.

Sorry, I rambled a little. But back to the main argument. It's not your family's choice. It's yours. The way I see it, you have a win-win situation. You either work full time as a magician and have loads of fun, or have a full time job and have magic as a hobby or side job. You stick with magic in either scenario.

Dude, of all the many things I've learned in life, everything you learn can be applied to anything. Magic lets you learn how to communicate(which is very important for any job) with people and it keeps your mind open and creative.

Your parents obviously care about you very much, and you must care about them equally. Sit them down, and talk to them. Explain to them how much magic means to you. Explain to them that it is something you enjoy doing. Some people enjoy piano, violin, and guitar. But you enjoy magic.

Hopefully they will understand!

You're family wants you to stop because its not productive for getting a job? lol... Think about everything else in life - computer games, tv, sports, video games, etc... Those are far less productive (with the exception of sports) IMO. If you are thinking about quitting just because your family doesn't agree with it, then maybe you're it's not meant to be, maybe you just don't love magic as much as you should. I hope you stay in magic, and if you're parents criticize you, argue with my above comments.

yeah if you really truly love magic keep doing magic. if it's your #1 priority, then keep working hard. but if it isnt your first, do other important things first.

The shame is that they don't support what you want to do. Parents should try and support their children with whatever they want to do, as long as it doesn't harm their kid.

My parents have and will always support any choice I want to do, but being an adult basically everything is my choice at this point.

My parents always saw magic when I was younger as a way to keep me out of trouble, and it did for the most part. Then I got into junior year of high school, and partied my ass off. Haha...

Best of luck to you and you should just do what makes you feel good, not what everyone else wants you to do.

I had this really funny moment at our christmas dinner. I was asked to perform. So I did. I did my usual 10min act/routine/thing and everyone loved it. All the people who saw it kept saying, you should make money out of this. Your really good. (One of the couples their told me that they used to hired a magician)

It really made that Christmas dinner. Everyone enjoyed them selfs and it was great. It was sort of like one of those "Ha, told you so" moments to my Mum. Because she is always telling me magic is a waste of time and money, and I never show anyone any magic.

And heres something someone told me when I told them about my Mum. "Follow your heart"

Cheers, Tom

similar thing happened with me and my dad.

I was constantly online watcing magic promo videos....watching the select few magic DVDs I had at the time, and constantly playing with cards. My dad would always complain about how I'm wasting so much time focusing on magic and on cards. I would get upset, but I wouldn't say anything......then came my first paying gig. I did a birthday party for quite a nice chunk of change, and he realized that this little "hobby" of mine could be quite lucrative :) So, now he supports me 100%, never questions me, and even promotes me and my magic to all of our family and his friends and co-workers.

If all else fails, get a paying gig, and show them how much $$$ you can make (please don't think that I'm into magic for the cash......far from it....but it took that fact to get support from my dad)

When I started, my parents said the same thing to me... "you'll never go anywhere with it, there's no money in it, you're wasting your time.." I just kept it as a hobby. After a few years, they grew more concerned that magic was taking up too much of my time. I don't know why; I had a great girlfriend, good grades in school, and had a well paying job and put myself through college. During college, I was asked numerous times to perform to raise funds. That took notice on the casino strip and by 2001, I was hired as a resident magician at a casino where I lived, performing 3 nights a week and getting paid $500 a night.

Needless to say, my parents changed their tune and said "You better practice!!!"

On one hand, I can understand why parents would say "magic isn't a good career"
On the other hand, why would any good parent deny their child something they enjoy doing. It's not like you're getting into trouble with it. I say more power to you! Keep the magic alive.

Here are some advices.

I assume you are quite young and you are a student. If that is the case, you should try to balance both your school work and magic. Don't give up either one of them, instead try to allocate time for both of them.

Show your parents that magic is not affecting your studies negatively. Show them that you did not neglect your studies because of magic. Good grades usually helps.

Try to get a paying gig, maybe during the school holidays. Or if you have some original creation you can try to sell them to other magicians. This will prove to them that magic can really get you a job.
