    I'm having second thoughts

As long as you don't switch decks during a performance, it's fine I think. Get some, play with them, if that's what you want. If you're performing with 125s, just don't perform that one trick. If you want to perform it, then use a different deck. I don't see a problem with doing just that; but...

    What do you do?

Accept it as a compliment, but I think you did well to remain professional and impartial.

Magician and Not so a Magician

Yes, absolutely. The concept is similar to developing rapport. There are certain effects I perform only after I have spent a certain amount of time with an audience, and feel that the atmosphere is conducive to what I'd like to do. It sounds like a clichéd patter line, but it also happens to be...

    Using Spy Devices in Magic

There are lots of ways you can do this Enzo. Start reading some of the things that have been suggested to you, and you'll find a lot of methods for exactly what you've described, using only pen and paper, and sometimes nothing at all if you so wish.

    Force a Phone Number

So is talking to them, I hear. Seems to work for me.

    I want to read minds

No worries Enzo. I know I'm giving rather general advice but I really do want to stress the importance of learning about mentalism. If you'd like more specific pointers in the future, let me know.

    I want to read minds

Well, ok, again, a few things. About books - I can understand not being comfortable with books. That said, the majority of great information is in books. So basically, it does mean that unfortunately, you will have to eventually delve into books if you want to find a lot of the best material...

    Cardini Change Battle

Yes, as I mentioned in my post above - Daniel Garcia Project, Vol. 1.

    I want to read minds

Enzo, There are some things you should realise. a) Yes, what you have said is possible. b) You should however realise that what we are doing is an illusion, so don't expect real magic c) Nonetheless, there are methods that do exactly what you say - some require devices, some don't even require...

    Solid Card books/DVDs

Tell me about Route 52? I've always been curious, but being a mentalist these days, I have more appropriate things to spend money on... But it'd be pretty high on my wants list if I was doing that stuff. I loved 52 Memories.

The Performance Is Worth More Than The Trick Itself

Also the Fitzkee Trilogy... I agree with the philosophies of the other books listed more, but it's still a very helpful read. Also, Our Magic.

    What are we making magic?

Ahh, I see, I think I misinterpreted the tone of your post slightly - my apologies on that. Yep, I certainly take your point there; although I'd add that the value/popularity of an art should not be judged solely on the prominence of its artists. Whilst you're probably right I think with your...

what us the best change shepherd change /goat change / db spin change? clipshift cha

There is no best change. Choose a change that works in the context of the effect you are performing. The Clipshift is a great change - but sometimes, using one hand may not make the most sense. The card may not be in the right position, or the performance context might be wrong. The GOAT change...

    Daring to Dream the Impossible

Toby - easily one of the better posts/threads I've seen around here. Very inspiring, and it applies to life, not just magic. Thanks for sharing.

    New Gimmick

As I said - work out how to make what you want to make, and find someone who uses those tools. Alternatively, speak to a craftsman and ask them how to make what you want to make. It will most likely be easiest to modify a sharpie cap, so start with that.

This makes me want to quit.

Well said - I've been lacking a good point of reference about visual magic. To repost a short anecdote from another thread - I performed recently an effect in which the spectator demonstrates photographic memory by remembering the positions of cards in a shuffled deck. She gave me a hug...

    New Gimmick

Depending on what you need, you could go to a carpenter, a jeweller, a builder, etc. Find a specialist craftsman who works with tools suitable for what you want to make. Or, just go out and talk to them about your gimmick - and get their recommendations on how to make it.

    What are we making magic?

Some quick notes - No, "Magic is a dying art" is not at all a given, just an opinion. -Judging the state of magic based on magic forums (or, indeed, the magic products that come out) is a highly erroneous measurement. When was the last time you saw Darwin Ortiz on a forum? John Carney? Arturo...
