Variations of a powerful card trick

I´m currently reading John Bannon´s new book Mentalissimo and found something that you might find interesting. Bannon dissects Ralph Hull´s trick "The three of clubs" from Greater Magic in the chapter "The Slidewinder Variations". There he offers four effects on the subject and an interesting...

Variations of a powerful card trick

Juan Tamariz has a nice version using mnemonica. So its not just a single card. But the card has a different color back than the deck. And the deck doesn´t seem to be involved. I think its the first effect on the Mnemonica Miracles DVD set and most likely also described in Mnemonica (the book).

    Double turnover get ready

Thumb count is certainly inferior to the pinky count. I think you can get away with a thumb count if you do it silently and quick while the right hand alreay covers that corner. But picking up a card from above at the outer left corner also seems kind of unnatural to me. But I did it that way...

    Double turnover get ready

Denis Behr said: "Professionals don´t take risks, they take a break." I guess that answers your question :-)

Where can I learn the JW grip?

For example on volume one of Eric Jones "Metal" DVD-Series. I´m usually not a big fan of ellusionist productions. But the Metal series is one of the few exceptions. I think they are really good.

    Magic in Spectator's Hands

The obvious classic: Sponge Ball transposition Also: some copper/silver transpositions

    Zingone Perfect Table Pass

I can´t say that I fully understand this but here´s what I get from the description: This is one of those contextual passes that will only fit to specific situations. Thats´s certainly why the start and end positions are mentioned in the description. The action starts after the deck was cut into...

    Hi guys, need some suggestions.

Another thing to consider: A strength of ambitious card routines is that they are modular (well, unless you construct something that isn´t). So you go with the flow and make it as long as the spectators are interested. Of course you should still consider what Amber said above: The phases should...

    Rubber band tricks/routines?

I you´re really interested in rubberband magic you really need to get Dan Harlan´s Magic with Rubber Bands L&L tapes. I just saw that they are currently on sale at llepub.com . They are old but I still think they are the definitive ressource. Dan´s Torn and restored rubber band is the best and...

    Disappearance of a toothpick

It sucks. Bad tutorials for bad tricks are probably harmful to the public perception of magic.

    OHTP Help Me Out

Probably needless to say that the instructions in Card College are excellent. Keep in mind that the OHTP is tougher to learn than one might think. So just keep on trying. (But find a good ressource anyway! As Vernon said: Practice doesn´t make perfect, practice makes permanent.)

Working on new "blank card" effects. What would you like to see?

Helder has another cool blank deck routine on his small miracles DVD: A deck is spread on the table face down and the spectator slides out one card that is not yet turned over. Helder removes four blank cards from an envelope that was sitting on the table from the beginning. The spectators card...

    Critique

Hi Mr. Book, I really like the style of the video! But since you´ve asked heres two thoughts: 1) Was the french drop a conscious choice? There´s more natural false transfers than this (if you need inspiration look up Gabi Parerras Chop Cup performance on youtube. that is probably the epitome of...

    Agreed. Card College is essential!

    Tablehopping Routine?

You should also consider the working conditions: -Although it´s called table hopping most of the time there´ll be little available space on the table. And if the table is somewhat long people in the back won´t be able to see if anything happens on the table surface. -If it´s a rather quiet space...

    Magic gaff.

Usually this depends on the context. In some tricks (e.g. Johns Bannon´s classic "Strangers Gallery") it´s a built in logic that you end with removing the gaffs from the deck. You can leave the gaff in the cardbox and then put the deck into the cardbox after a trick, do something else and then...

    Top Ten Close up illusions

I´m surprised that so far only obrien mentioned sponge balls. The reaction you get from a simple sponge ball transposition into a spectators hand makes you feel guilty about the little effort that it takes you to create that effect. That also makes cards tricks a little frustrating at times: You...

    Sponge

Mike Caveney also has an interesting benson bowl routine with a plunger. It´s in his Wonders book. But that certainly doesn´t fit with everbodies style.

    Two cup routine

BTW: The two most popular two cup routines are probably Tommy Wonders (from the Books of Wonder) and David Williamsons Containers & Spheres (from Williamsons Wonders). But both use stackable (non-chopped) Cups and Balls cups and not normal everyday drinking cups
