The above statement is pretty much the truth. This is about 30 pages, not a lot of text, and reads through in about fifteen or twenty minutes. It's meant to be read through a few times to fully understand the system, letting their advice seep in fresh each time. Completely Cold is designed to get you started in cold readings almost immediately.
Think about that for a second. You finish this book, and by the next hour, you could be doing a cold reading. It really is an extremely simple, deceptive method.
It's essentially a mix of psychology and semantic trickery, like all cold reading systems, but boiled down to the very, very bare bones. Those magicians with a healthy vocabulary and a strong personality will find this clicking instantly, yet anyone picking this up can perform it within the same day. There's no real mechanics to learn, it's all presentation, so you kind of HAVE to perform it in order to practice.
What you get are a handful of rules / suggestions and two basic principles that will have you reading minds before you know it. I was honestly amazed at how simple the system was, and the line that "you could give a phone psychic this book and have them ready to work the next day" is very much true.
The drawback to this is that you can't get as much information as you would from other cold reading systems. It is not as analytical, but that's the trade-off, as it's 100% impromptu - no billets, props, stooges, or pre-show work. Walk right up to someone and read their mind. But it needs to be said that Completely Cold is a very specific system, and is not as powerful as most cold reading systems out there. It's hard to phrase this to avoid exposure, but essentially, you'll have the audience completely convinced you read your spectator's mind, but it never goes beyond that - you won't be able to reveal names from their past, or tell them what number they're thinking of. If you want concrete facts, you're going to have to fish them out yourself. But for a magician looking to infuse a little mentalism in her show, this is perfect. Mentalists with a working cold reading system would probably be better serviced by what they know, but it is a nice review of basic concepts.
This is the essential Beginner's Course in cold reading. You don't even have to advance to any other system - you learn this and use it your whole life, and people are convinced you read minds.
Another drawback is the price. Forty bucks for a small 30-page book teaching you a two-rule system is a big sting to the wallet. Again, though, the trade-off here is that you'll be up and running within the same day, and you don't have to memorize or learn complicated systems or theories.
I haven't had a chance to perform this yet, but there are transcriptions of performances in the book itself that will give you a working sense of how to use the system. It is taught extremely well due to its simplicity, and it's worth repeating that you'll be prepared to cold read within the day you finish this book. All it requires is an understanding of the system, some creativity, and an amazing presentation - though, as magicians, you should have two of those three things anyway.
