Creation of gimmicks

What books are there for creating my own gimmicks? More specifically, I want to create a routine around "elemental magic," but don't want to spend a thousand dollars on gimmicks I'd enjoy making myself. Any tricks involving smoke, electricity, fire, water/ice, etc. are the general goal.
There's some tricks I feel I could make completely on my own now (I have a pretty good idea for a high-end cloudy gimmick), but for my own safety, I feel it'd be best to find out what books there are in this regard.

Science Experiments books would be a good start I think.
Even kids books could be a big help.

I suppose that's basically along the lines of what I'm looking for. More so just science experiments that can be done safely with skin contact. I'm sure creating a pocket Van De Graaf can do a lot for effects I'd like (not to break the 4th wall too much), but I don't want to fry myself. I also know there's a lot of recipes for flash paper, but I don't want chemical burns or spontaneous combustion of a flash paper pack. I had a couple books as a kid that had instructions for creating flash paper, as well as other interesting "experiments" that could be used for elemental routines, but they've gotten lost over the years.
If there's books specifically written for magicians that plan to go down routes like this, I'd greatly appreciate a link.
Apologies if this would've been better off in the magic discussion section, this is my first post.
