I am learning cardistry and a new deck if very slippy, when I watch youtube I see the decks look really old.
So my question is do you have to break a new deck in? Or is it best when the cards are brand new?

Cards right out of the box, in my opinion, are tough to work with. Just work with them for a while. I typically work a lot of beginner cuts and shuffling with them and try out some intermediate cuts to see if the sliding around interferes with control.

I can't say what amount of time that would be for you, but It shouldn't take you too long for you to get them in working order.

There is a brief section in The Trilogy explaining how to break in a deck of cards. The website could also help with your cardistry. Here is a brief video of stuff to do to break in a deck of cards.
