I am feeling despondent.

Too much magic, so much exposure. I don't think most of the well known performers(who market their illusions) realise the magnitude of all this piracy and theft. It's bloody huge.

The more material they release, the more magic sits out in the open. I mean WHY are there so many tricks on sale these days? I don't mean to sound rude, but is it the only way these guys can make money?

Yet when I step outside of the internet and into the real world,no one EVER calls me out that they've seen this effect on the internet or know who daniel garcia is.
Its not just these days, its always been this way. When the internet got started it just expanded a bit more.

Usually I'm not too fussed about "exposure", I know it takes passion, enthusiasm and a whole lot of practice to actually get anywhere with the art; which is obviously only something a magician would do. But lately I've been seeing more and more of it, a single ripped DVD will be downloaded by literally thousands of people, in some cases over ten thousand.

The magic business didn't just expanded a bit more when the internet got started, it completely took off. That's like saying people started writing letters to each other a bit more when the internet came out. Just go to any online magic store are go through their stuff, one dealer alone will have hundreds of books and DVDs, all of which is obtainable elsewhere through any kid's fingertip... free of charge.

This is not really supposed to be another nail-biting thread on exposure, I just can't understand why people are continuously selling all these effects. One thing I do see though, is that it's quite evident that the average magician has little or no creativity when it comes to magic.

Its not going to hurt you as a performer.

Almost every magic dvd that has been released is available for illegal download, but is it going to hurt you?

Its not like someone is going to wake up and think,

"Hmm what am i going to do today, maybe i should become a magician! I think i will illegaly download some cool theory11 products, maybe some Chris kenner 1 on 1´s and a good dvd on the Pass"

Its not going to happen.

Some poor magicians will be downloading them but they probably wont leave their mothers basement until they are 48 years old so its ok.

I agree... although the majority of beginner magicians DO download and pirate a lot of these tricks and DVDs. This is one of those topics that will be discussed and brought up for a long time. Personally, I don't think anybody or anything is going to stop this or even TRY and stop this.

Pirating DVD's and illegally downloading may keep some of these rookie magicians happy and they may think they are "truly" doing magic, but until they step out into the crowds and learn by actually performing...they aren't helping themselves become better.

Books and DVDs and lecture notes help you, but nothing beats jumping out there and doing it head on and learning from your experiences. You will gain so much knowledge from each gig or show you perform it is ridiculous. You will learn what works and why it works and why one joke worked with one crowd but not another.

I don't have much to say for the kids who just sit at home and make dumb tutorials for all the other little teens to worship them. I guess this is how they want to get attention as they hide behind their keyboard. Oh well.

For all of you young guys out there who have ambitions of performing....just do it.
Learn about 5 effects that you know you can do over and over in your sleep and get out there and start amazing people. You don't need 50 tricks.

The thing is, you really have to go out of your way in order to learn magic. Most people do have access to learning these tricks, but never look them up.

Here is an example: I had a teacher in my high school for 3 years, and every friday he did a magic trick for the class. Every single time we were amazed. I learn now that all of his magic was a series of double lifts, deck set-ups with false cuts and shuffles, and forces. I didn't know that for 3 years, yet it was at my fingertips the entire time with a simple youtube search. It took me wanting to perform these tricks in order to learn how to do them.

I am going to school to be a teacher as well (accepted into Penn State's college of education, graduate '11) and i plan to perform a card trick every friday as well. I am not worried in the least bit about someone knowing these tricks, or finding out how to do them. I say this because it is all about presentation. Even knowing the tricks i still get surprised by their performances.

Even if i run into one of the ten thousand magicians out there, they will not reveal my secrets because that would ruin their routine as well.

Also, if the "double lift" were given away to my class, there are so many ways to get around that, because it can work to your advantage. They only know that move, and look for that move specifically, so doing a trick with another sleight, or a double and then another sleight, will completely throw them off. If you look for something thats not there, it is so hard to catch anything else thats going on. Knowing one and not all sleights can actually distract the viewer.

And that would be worst case scenerio.

So cry about it. Put your cards away and give up. Or focus in on what your doing to makile it and to hell with everyone else.

It's not hard to find something to complain about, but it's not easy to do something for it.

I agree with William.

God damn guys, stop whining about exposure- it's not going stop- it's not going to hurt, suck it up and deal with it.

You know what would get your guys' attention off of youtube exposure? STOP GOING ON INTERNET FORUMS SO MUCH, stay away from the boards for a while. Get your asses out in the real world and perform for people.

I find that the people who ***** about exposure the most are those who don't go out and perform and they just sit there on the computer.

STOP STOP STOP whining about exposure and who is exposing what- god damn it. I have never ONCE had someone tell me "I know how you did it, I looked it up online." Exposure isn't going to stop, so stop crying about it.

Agreed haha. People go online to look at porn before they look how to do a magic trick a magician showed them.
Even though exposure is out there, you RARELY find laymen who look on youtube for everything about magic.
