Havent had that happen yet. But under what circumstances did they spot the wax? Did you possibly use too much wax thus making it easier to spot or an older piece of practice wax that may have gotten slightly dirty? Could it have been the lighting? Learn from it!

In that situation all I can think of is misdirecting and performing a different trick

Yea, it should not be a problem in the first place. Don't keep your hands still - movement hides irregularities. Watch your angles. Use clean wax if the old stuff starts to get dark.

If a spectator notices, ditch it. In the action of moving your hand up to eye level to see what the spectator is talking about, ditch and drop it. When you turn your hand for your spectator to see, you can quickly take care of any residue. Always be ready with a follow up trick, as you may not be able to perform the trick you were planning on if you have to ditch.

Do the severed bloody thumb trick. If you hand them a digit you just hacked off with a machete I guarantee they will forget about the wax on your thumb! Just don’t miss. The DL is a bear with no thumb.
