It's less than a month away - National Playing Card Collection Day - October 17!

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by EndersGame, Sep 21, 2020.

  1. Alex Chin has just posted an official `deck reveal' video for this year's National Playing Card Collection Day.

Pre-orders open on October 17, at 9pm EST via the official site:

Here's what Alex wrote about the deck over on United Cardists:

I received a lot of messages inquiring if there would be a 2020 NPCCD deck this year. I wanted to confirm yes there will be ... I think there is a slot for mini presentations Thursday based on the schedule in which I can pop something in for it to be revealed for streaming the convention. Official pre-order for the cards will be Saturday October 17th. I'll start pumping more pictures out after the official reveal Thursday.

Every year the latest NPCCD deck always becomes my new favorite deck I've created, and this year is no different. The 2020 NPCCD deck is one that I found a lot of solace in making as response to this year. The deck is solid on both fronts so that both tuck box and court card enthusiasts will enjoy. I hope to see you guys for the pre-order sale this Saturday .

There are 5 decks for the 5th anniversary each one representing a different spirit. A special 6th deck will only be available with the full set. Set numbers will be made to match meaning if you get a 6-deck set you'll also get lower numbers (if that interests you).

It's a more straightforward offering this year. There is no internal/external matrix to track like last year and of the 6 decks, 4 of them are actually completely different print runs to help make more clear as well.
  2. Also don't forget that this deck is being made in support of Portfolio52. So don't be too critical of the pricing, because this isn't like normal cases where you're buying a deck, but it's about raising funds to support the world's only and best playing card database, which is completely free for anyone to use for keeping track of their playing card collection.
  3. Today is National Playing Card Collection Day! #CardCollectionDay

    Taken from the official site:

This October 17 is National Playing Card Collection Day

National Playing Card Collection Day celebrates the collection of one of the oldest forms of portable art (circa 1200s). Playing cards are literal galleries of art and inspiration, showing and communicating the intentions of an artist to the public while also archiving the cultural values of their time.

Collecting these art pieces allow us to be curators of our own galleries to display. These collections can be seen as extensions of the collector and this day is a time to celebrate and share their collections to the public.

These decks represent how we see the art of card collection - beautifully unique, consistently dynamic, and authentically yours. The decks are designed to compel and test the boundaries of the playing card world to keep our art consistently growing. They’re kept at small runs not because of artificial limits, but because they are crafted by hand, choosing to side step the industrial world of automation in favor of a more authentic handmade piece of art for your collection.

The 2020 NPCCD Hindsight series was designed as a direct response for the events of this year through the classical aesthetics of Greek architecture and mythology. A specifically poignant card to highlight is the Queen of Hearts, representing Hope left behind in Pandora’s box - her isolation and entrapment becoming an allegory for many of us today.

Note: This year’s deck is pre-order. Artwork is completed and final color swatches are being chosen. Photos and video colors may differ from final product in favor of matching aesthetics across paper, gilding, and cards.

There are several completely different print runs involved in this project. Mixed back designs and fresco court textures you see are shown to display the variety in the series. Each box contains a different spirit and specific singular color scheme.

    2020 NPCCD Single Spirit

This year’s deck is HINDSIGHT, based around the tragedies of classic Greek mythology that have seemingly bled into our world today, turning fiction into fact. The stories relate in particular to Pandora and her husband Epimetheus.

Each box is a transforming enclosure that expands from box into a larger temple to reveal a classical golden frieze wrapping each side. Trapped in each box is one of Pandora’s spirits. Sealing each box is a large and purposeful warning, Intaglio engraved, telling you not to open the box.

The cards feature fully custom fresco-style painted courts made to feel as if they were discovered from ancient ruins. The backs of each card features beautiful foil colored textiles (based on actual Roman patterns) that breed authenticity into the story. Decks are available gilded and ungilded.
