Guys,

I emailed Lee some excellent advice, having come back from Asia this September. This is what I wrote:

  • I've heard that unconsciousness generally helps on the airplane ride. True story: I brought one bag too many for my magic props. Yes, this means books and DVDs, hoping to use them on the aircraft. And what happened? I ended up watching Angels and Demons, X-Men Origins Wolverine, and Night at the Museum II a hundred times and all with a damn migraine the whole way through. Just thinking about it makes me feel something wrong with my head! If you have to take morphine, don't hold back. I'm telling you right now.
  • I just missed you by months; luckily I got back here before you left, so I know some things from the place. Here's one: be careful what you drink. Make sure something is water before you purchase it for 120 Yen (which is not so bad). True story: I was at a temple once and I bought what I thought was water but found out was a weird electrolyte solvent that was similar in consistency to Pocari Sweat. After tasting a full bottle in the Japanese food store in Columbus (my bottle got confiscated before flight), I realized I didn't even like the flavor.
  • Absorb the scenery around you as you go; if you have to, have some (SD) cards ready cuz you'll need to take a lot of cameras and movies. By the way, if you want to go anywhere, use a taxi. Their service is pretty good. You can take a camera of the rolling landscape as you go along.
  • Don't be afraid to take an evening stroll to relax yourself. When my family went there, we did go and it was pretty nice.
  • DO NOT enter the pachinko buildings without proper ear protection. I made the mistake of doing so; don't ask me why, just TRUST me. I recommend the same type of ear protection used in the firing range or the sonicator room.
  • Be careful before you swim in the hotel. I once got charged like $40 for using the pool; I've never been charged like that before. Oh well, the pool management is a stickler for clenliness; they have an antiseptic solution and a shower at the entrance. Be careful; the poolsides are probably not meant to be investigated first; I accidentally stepped in the initial solution once, as the water was virtually invisible.
  • Slippers. Collect them all, they are super handy for the hotel rooms you go to. And they're very comfortable.
  • Check and double-check your maps and locations when you're there. And keep with the flow. I don't call it the Labyrinth Country for nothing, you know. Speaking of which, prepare to endure grueling periods of walking if you go to the metro or sub-level malls in places like Tokyo or Kyoto. I'd recommend gel supports in your luggage.
  • Don't be afraid to get some souvenirs when you're there. It's not very often you do this, you know. Recommended items include kawaii things, weird utility objects (you'll see), yukatas (kimono-like Japanese bedwear), tourist-oriented wear, koinobori, martial arts supplies (these two being the hardest to find, good luck ), and those amulets you find at the temples like those in Kyoto. You never know when you need an extra boost in luck ;)
  • Recommended sites: Kyoto: Sanjusangendo temple, Kyoto Station, Kyomizu-dera complex, Chion-in temple. Nara: Todaiji temple, Nara National Museum, Kasuga shrine. Tokyo: Harajuku, anywhere in Shinjuku area, Meiji shrine. That's pretty much it for me. Ten thumbs up
  • Finally, you are totally ****ed unless you buy one of these at the airport, just ask around for it.

What I did not warn him was that he must stay away from feeding the deer at Nara (specifically Todaiji complex) at all. They will follow him around and drive him nuts. If someone can send that over to him, duly appreciated ;-)

So, all that aside, for all the people who've been to Japan before, what useful tidbits of advice could you give Master Lee Asher when he goes, so that his trip is most comfortable? I'm sure you guys have something, whether it be what anime museums to go to, what food is the best, what shinkansen line to use, and so on. No matter how quirky it is :p.

Give it your best shot!
