Update on "booya!"

Hello there, I just wanted to give a quick update from my previous thread "booya!" a while back.
So Michael went to see Bebo Thursday night and he asked him what the situation was. Bebo said he doesn't want us until the nightclub is put in (reasonable.) That'll be in April. So yes it's a ways away, but at least we know that we'll have a gig coming up, which is nice. We are going to pitch him the prices when it gets closer to the time, using Draven's method.

I want to say thank you to everyone for the advice and encouragement you have given, it's helped a lot!

Jacob

Jacob, sounds great. I went to the high class winery place last night with my wife to scope it out. Wow...this place was top notch. Our dinner, wine, and tip was about $130 so if I can get into this place to work on weekends they should definitely be able to throw a good price back at me if they are interested. I swapped cards with the manager last night but did not time for an impromptu performance. I could see she needed to get to other things. She said to expect an email soon. She did say they hire live entertainment for ladies night and big events in the summer so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. As of now they have two musicians and no other type of entertainment.

Awesome Rick, that sounds like a great place! That would be awesome if you can land that gig. What do you do for your "5 minute audition?"

Jacob, I did NOT get to audition or do an impromptu performance. The lady contacted me back today and unfortunately she said they only hire musicians and are not even contemplating close up magic at this time. Rats....I have a feeling they have no idea what good close up magic is. Oh well, at least I tried.

You could try David Stone's method. Go back with some friends and do magic for them so that people can see the entertainment value.

When a meal runs well over $100 for two, I'm probably not going to just pop back in with friends (who would also have to pay for $100 meals) and attempt the David Stone method. This place was high class and would probably kindly ask me to be seated back at my table from what I saw last night. Ahh...well. I have a few other places I may attempt.

That won't always work and wouldn't exactly look professional on his part.

Performing magic for friends is unprofessional? I'm not saying get up and try to do table hopping or an impromptu parlor show. I'm saying do some magic at the table for the friends.

The price did occur to me. Dropping that kind of money on a gamble is risky. But again, I didn't mean get up and do table hopping or something, just perform some stunners for friends while at the table.

Rick, that sucks I'm sorry. But it's good not to dwell too much on one loss, or else you can't move forward. I know you didn't get one, but I was asking what kind of stuff you do when you do get a chance to audition.

Christopher: It would look unprofessional because the restaurant would see right through what he was doing. It's like going to ask mom when dad says no. They turned him down, and are not going to change their mind if he comes in with friends to perform, it's like showing them what they are missing and that's kind of tacky.

Well it's also the fact that the place was an upscale restaurant and not a "Family" place and really having his friends show up and pay 130 dollar bill for each of their meals just so he can "show them what they are missing", is kind of over doing it.

Funny thing is, I've heard stories of something like this happening to a few people. They'll end up hanging out at the bar and a previous client notices them, so you end up performing for the people. The manager sees this and rather than thinking "Maybe we should hire the guy." they end up escorting you from the building and thus your chances are now even more ruined for the place than before.

Jacob,
Should I have gotten to show the manager just a few minutes worth I would have gone into mismade bill, Kostya's Warning with the lighter, CMH on her thumbs, and then finished with a sloppy triumph or Biddle. Just enough to show that I have the skill, presentation and would have been an asset to their establishment. Oh well. I'm not going to lose sleep over it. In fact I'm already planning to stop in at another local winery / restaurant and try again. Eventually I'm bound to get in somewhere.

Quick note : David Stone's method doesn't start with handing a business card - he just goes in and does magic, causes a stir at his table and gets the wait staffs attention, eventually the manager comes over and he says that he does occasionally work for restaurants. If Rick had done this before having a conversation with the manager it may have worked out, but it's impossible to tell for sure.

Rik,
I know...I thought about that, but being that it was just my wife and I, I wasn't just going to go up to a random table and begin an impromptu performance. Trust me...I did have the urge.
I do have another winery / restaurant contacting me back tomorrow to see what their thoughts are. I'll keep everyone posted.

Break a leg, both of you (Rick and Jacob). I hope it goes well.

Well fellas, I have once again received bad news that this 2nd Winery is NOT willing to give me a go either. Apparently the owners excuse was that he has tried magic 2X in the past and both guys were horrible experiences to work with and so he is done traveling down that road.

Sounds like once one of us ruins it for an establishment it hinders our chances. I understand his point.

Shame. I've had similar experiences in the past. You can keep trying, of course, but you can also just work on developing the reputation in that area, so that if you want to go back down this road in the future, you don't have to approach them with, "I'm a magician," but instead, "I'm Rick Everhart. You may have heard of me."
