    Halloween Party Gig

Thanks sharing that experience, Tyler. The idea to use the D'lite with the kid's glow stick was fabulous. Vernon sid we should adapt to whatever the surroundings and environment we find ourselves in might be. (paraphrasing). I agree with your viewpoint that, above all, entertaining the...

A few concerns about the classic pass again :-)

There is no set length of time that it should "logically" take. It will take as long as it takes. Everyone is different, and therefore some are going to pick it up faster than others; some never will; and no one will ever get good at it in two days, or two weeks, or in most cases, even two...

Why are fellow magicians so combative sometimes?

@Disaster Theory: "...their egos would be greatly unjustified." I don't think big egos are ever justified, even if someone is really "good." I prefer and admire humility, and I believe that most people do, as well. Just my opinion...

Why are fellow magicians so combative sometimes?

Gabriel makes a good point about the heightened Internet access/usage. As far as the "douche like behavior" Disaster Theory describes, I think there are 3 reasons for it: E G O

    Magic at school and college

Go for it! Be who you are, have fun and and don't worry about what people might think - a true artist does not...

    Flashiest card trick?

I would have to say that my flashiest card trick is a demonstration of how gamblers are able to cheat in poker by always being able to control the aces. A pressure fan is made; each ace is inserted into a different part of the fan; the fan is closed and the deck is then "shuffled." The procedure...

I am certain that I would be on pins and needles watching that routine!

    What is in a name?

I perform "magic" in two distinct settings: (1) As a professional, who is hired to entertain people at special events or in restaurants/bars; and (2) As an amateur who performs anywhere, anytime for friends, family and strangers. When I walk up to someone or a group of people in a professional...

    card forcing

This thread kind of inspired me to go back to a great little book I bought years ago compiled by Theodore Annemann, entitled, "202 Methods of Forcing." It is filled with gems, and you are bound to find some that suit you or the particular effects for which you need a force.

    Hindu force origins...

From the research I have done, although the Hindu Shuffle Force has been widely published, the creator is unknown. At least according to Dennis Behr, a well-respected card magician who has put together a huge database called "Conjuring Archive." See...

What should you tell a spectator

Another one I've seen in the ad copy: "This will fry them." This kind of marketing and the other examples Reality One gave above are unfortunate because they encourage magicians to think of their audiences as adversaries in a battle of wits, rather than people to be entertained, uplifted...

    card forcing

Yes, exactly. The force card is on top of the deck to begin with. After you pick up the top packet, you point to the top card of the lower packet and say something like, "Please take a look at the card you cut to, and remember that card."

    card forcing

I highly recommend the cross-cut force. They, themselves, cut the deck, and with a bit of time misdirection, you will never get caught. And, they will be absolutely convinced they had a free and fair choice. Been doing it for many years and it's never let me down. By far my fave force.

    Saturday walk around gig report

Interesting story, Justinquill, about a rather unique gig. Thanks for sharing your experience. It appears you handled it quite well, and the proof is in the pudding, since you came out of it with 3 more gigs in your pocket. Congratulations! The sponge balls are pretty much always a winner...

What should you tell a spectator

@ Lord Magic: "Because honestly, if they want to irritate you so that maybe your rest of the performance is getting affected too (like in a restaurant or something, you go to another table but they follow you there too and hinder your performance) they deserve harshness." I guess I am lucky...

What should you tell a spectator

@RealityOne: "Maybe... but I think there is something more to why they don't interrupt the movie to give you a theory of how it is done." People know that a movie is not "real." They know that these are actors merely playing a part, and that in most cases, the story itself is completely made...

    My hands are on fire!

Definitely some very good advice and thoughts have been posted, and they are applicable almost all of the time. However, I think that it is unavoidable that from time to time, there is going to be that person who cares about nothing but trying to show up the performer and prove how clever and...

    ACAAN

There are definitely some excellent versions, as have been mentioned here. My particular favorite is I.C.A.A.N. by J.K. Hartman. It's in his latest book, Card Dodgery. It's a unique and entertaining take on the plot.

    My hands are on fire!

PS If you are worried that you will not be able to set up the deck without detection or suspicion because Mr. Hand-burner will be closely scrutinizing you, there is a simple solution. Just have a matching deck in your pocket, which you had previously set up. Many times I have had an extra deck...
