Part of the reason for the awkwardness is that it is a casual trick with the move on the offbeat. So standing behind a table for an unblinking camera makes it kind of difficult. I was also trying to make the effect too clean (meaning no fidgeting with the deck like shuffling, cutting the deck, etc) that in the end, made it even more odd.
In performing situations, I give the spectator the two jacks to hold onto and ask that the jacks don't see the selected card. And when I take the jacks back, I'll ask the spectator if the jacks saw the selected card, and that's when I lay the jacks on top of the deck.
From the feedback I've gotten so far, I need to include audio if I'm going to use the control I used.
