You're going to need to be more specific on your subject than "magic tricks".

What about magic tricks are you doing the speech on? What class is this?

Card tricks and it's for psychology of success my teacher wants us to do a speech on something we are passionate about

You should be speaking on the fact that humans are not that smart when it comes to the concept of "multitasking" lol. Magic further proves that multitasking is total bs without actually researching the brain.

What about card tricks, though. You just used different words for "magic tricks".

What, exactly, are you trying to communicate?

For instance, in a few weeks I'll be doing a presentation on how magicians manipulate perception to a perceptual neuroscience graduate class. That's a very specific topic. "Card tricks" is an incredibly vague topic.

Are you going to talk about the history of card tricks? The major card magicians of the past and present? The way the manufacture of cards has impacted the methods that are used in card magic? Are you going to be teaching any tricks?

I mean, I think you need to figure out what you're actually trying to do your speech on before you start trying to research.

Ok cool.

How long do you have? There's some card tricks that are somewhat historically significant. I'm betting RealityOne will know more than me, but I do know, for instance, that Out Of This World was performed for Churchill during the great war. He delayed a cabinet meeting so he could see it over and over, and afterward supposedly reported feeling more confident over his instincts vis-a-vis war strategy.

Cups and balls are a classic, arent too hard to learn, and display the use of misdirection pretty well.
You could probably work dress code by calen morelli somewhere in there.
Like the rest of these guys im not really sure what you're going for, but those are two tricks that tend to work quite well in presentations

3-5 minutes is pretty short. A minute or so talking about the history of playing cards (They are quite old, used for fortune telling before Tarot was invented, which was for a specific game and/or preaching), the difference between card manipulation and card tricks, some notable card magicians such as Hofsinzer, Houdini, Cardini, Malini, Vernon, Miller, Curry - the Out Of This World story is a good one. Then contemporary card magicians like Richard Turner, Jason England, Daniel Madison, the Buck Twins, and of course, David Blaine. Honestly, I'm not even sure you'd have time to do a trick in this speech without running over significantly.

Precisely what Chris.T said. That 5 minutes is going to fly by, especially since it's going to be on a topic that you care about. Maybe have a card trick or two prepared in case your professor or classmates ask you to perform something.

When I was in college (centuries ago) as part of a "Public Speaking" class I did a speech explaining how Magic allowed this very shy person to become more comfortable interacting with people; particularly large groups of people.
There are numerous 'psychology' topics you could mention with regards to magic but rather than EXPOSE any particular magic effect, it may be more interesting to explain what it is about magic (as an art form) that makes you 'passionate'.
You can talk about magic and reference many of the great performers your audience would know by name without the "requirement" of performing.

Now, I realize you want to perform - at any opportunity you get. Perhaps consider that your speech would be so interesting and so engaging that your colleagues would come to you and ASK YOU to perform for them.

That is my 2 cents; worth every penny!!
