Description:
Function 9 is a collection of nine effects from the mind of Calen Morelli. These 2 discs contain effects that are practical and hard hitting using everything from playing cards to rubber bands to chewing gum. Each effect is taught in detail covering over 3 hours on the 2 DVDs.
Disc 1:
VGH(a+b):
Description:
(a) A selected card visually jumps from the deck to your hands, ending in between the spectators hands! (b) An in hands and extremely visual version of Paul Harris' grasshopper effect.
My Thought:
I thought that this effect was brilliant, I loved the visual jumping in both parts, but I would not combine the routines personally, because (a) is more hard hitting than (b), so it would be taking it down a notch instead of making it stronger. But they are great separate. (a) is great, I love the visual magnetic routine, kind of patter and it makes it look so good when it reaches the other aces in their hand. (b) is good because the visual jumping in the aces, but I think there are too many jumps, maybe taking it down 1 jump would be good.

PEN IN BOTTLE:
Description:
A pen visually jumps inside a full bottle of water.
My Thought:
I love this effect, the method is very clever and it has an awesome visual beat. I like this so much because instead of doing a coin or a cap, Calen chose a pen as the object to put in this bottle which EVERYONE usually has been in contact with. And you can hand the bottle out with the pen inside of it. I definitely will use this in my repertoire.

TRANSPORT:
Description:
You hold a cell phone and the spectator holds a cell phone. A rubber band is wrapped around the cell phone in your hand. The band visually vanishes from the phone in your hands and reappears on the phone they have been holding the entire time!
= (bonus) = A borrowed ring instantly links onto a few rubber bands worn on your wrist then it melts off just as impossibly.
My Thought: I thought this was OK, I love the effect where the band travels to the other phone, I just like the way too achieve it that much. Because the gimmick, and the fake wrap. It just doesn’t appeal to me. And the misdirection you must give is hard. But the effect is a reputation maker! The Bonus Effect is pretty good considering it’s a bonus. The Method I like better but the effect is not as good as transport.

SUSPENDED:
Description:
You hang one band on another. Then in an instant half of the supporting band vanishes for just a moment leaving the band hanging in the air! Pure visual goodness!
My Thought: I do not like this method at all!!!!!! It uses magic utility you can get at most magic shop and is very useful but, the setup to get into this is terrible to me!! I love the effect, but it doesn’t seem good to me, I wouldn’t bother.

If you perform card under box, you will love this powerful routine!
My Thought: This is my favorite effect on this 2 disc set. I love the reactions of this effect. It’s great for hecklers too, trust me! This effect works every time when performed right, I love the patter you can make on this! The misdirection, everything is perfect in this effect!

Description:
A card to hat with a kicker ending that will blow your audience away!
My Thought: I liked this one, but the hat brought the impact down a little than in the first one, I tried this and did not that good of reactions, just a simple cool. This effect is still good, but the misdirection is hard because the hat.

FRICTION:
Description:
An insanely visual rubber band thru bill routine! Impromptu and easy to learn.
My Thought: Loved it! This trick packs a very visual punch when they see the bill MELT off and instantly appear back on! This could be a great on the spot effect. If you borrow a rubber band.

SUGAR FREE:
Description:
A piece of gum visually jumps from the pack to your mouth, instantly!
My Thought: I thought this honestly was the worst effect on this dvd, still good, but the method is not very good and the gimmick is hard to make, but it is an ok effect, wouldn’t use it though.

TRANSIT:
An ordinary rubber band is wrapped around your finger and visually jumps from finger to finger. Calen is back with two new handling on this super visual effect.
My Thought: This is a very nice effect with a gimmick that is very practical and can be carried simply, this is a nice effect, they do see the rubber band travel!

Conclusion: So this is was a great dvd set from Calen, I can’t wait for him to make more creations and place them out on the market. Awesome!
