How to Meet a Stranger - Part 3a: The Pre-show Work....

This next trick is brilliant. It will work if you want it to. And it will help you to meet a stranger and give you a conversation framework. (Credit goes to A. Braun for this)

But why would you want a conversation framework? Shouldn't conversation just flow and be natural?

Well, yes, ideally. However, most people do not have the conversational skills to succeed. This is where a framework helps. A frame work can act much like the outline of a speech. When you know where you are headed and what your main objective is, then you are much more comfortable in your presentation, and much more at ease going on a side trail, because you know where to come back to. This is exactly the same as scripting your magic routines. This technique will ultimately guide your conversation, while still allowing you ample freedom to be loose and free with your discussions.

How will this help your magic? Well, it will not affect your sleights, but it will help you to be confident, and to feel equipped for performance and social situations (see Part 1 & 2)

Let's begin. Normally, I would have you close your eyes and imagine the following in the most vivid way possible. However because you cannot read through your eyelids (unless of course you're magic), then just read the list - one line at a time and really take a moment to really imagine and build the image in your head and remember it. I promise it will all make sense, and it will be very, very worth your while for the rest of your conversing life.

Imagine a NAME PLATE. Like a licence plate with the word NAME on it.

And picture a HOUSE. - Picture the detail. See the chimney. Picture the deck that wraps around the front of the house, what color is it etc.

Now in your mind, smash that name plate into the front of the house. See it crush the front porch, and the steps.

Next imagine a desk, an OFFICE DESK. Picture the detail. Color, shape, size etc.

Now imagine that desk is being smashed into the chimney of the house, crushing the chimney, the bricks falling and rolling down the roof, leaving the desk balanced on the chimney.

Imagine two pails of your favorite ICE CREAM sitting on the desk. -Big 5 gallon pails like at an ice cream shop.

Next imagine a pole is pierced through the two buckets and at the end of the pole is a flag with a word on it. The word on the FLAG is CHALLENGE. (really picture the flag!)

At the end of the flag pole is standing a tiny little FAMILY. A Dad, a Mom, a son and a daughter. The dad has a pointy nose.

Finally, picture a SKIER skiing down the father's nose (like a ski jump).

That's it. That contains all you need to have a great conversation with a stranger:

Name Plate
House
Office Desk
Ice Cream
Challenge Flag
A Family
A Skier

If you can remember this list, you are set. Run it through your head the next 24 hours and see if you can remember everything.

Then I will give you the keys to unlock it.

Stay tuned.
