LESSON LEARNED: Never Say You Can't Do Something

Last week I was watching Shuffle Play from dealersgrip.com and I was learning how to do the Bracket Cut.

Bracket Cut is simple in concept yet challenging to execute. I was having a hell of a time trying to lift the bottom packet high enough so I could successfully make the cut. The grip you need to lift the bottom packet is really uncomfortable for someone who has been doing this for just three months.

I was convinced I just did not have the physical ability to pull off this cut. Yet, I kept practicing but I didn't take it seriously enough because I thought this cut would be impossible for me to perform.

Then today something interesting happened. With a deck in my left hand, I was watching YouTube videos. Totally engrossed in what I was watching, I wasn't even paying attention to what I was doing with my deck.

What I was actually doing was playing around with the Bracket Cut unconsciously. All of a sudden I stopped watching YouTube, paid attention to my deck because I was in a state of shock.

I was in a state of shock because without me even thinking about it. I had pulled off the bracket cut, a move that I thought would be impossible to perform. I had to take a moment and really think about what I had done so I could replicate it but the bottom line was that I figured it out without any conscious effort. From that point on I have been practicing the Bracket Cut all day. I can perform the move but I have a long way to go before I can master it.

This experience taught me an invaluable lesson. Never say you can't do something.

Be patient when practicing a flourish, give yourself enough time to get a feel for the move, and you will ultimately figure it out without you even realizing it.

The same thing is valid for those "I have small hands" comments. I was tempted to think the same when learning the Z-shape charlier (first cut of the of Kryptonite), only to later realize I wasn't holding the packets properly.

Give yourself some time with any sleight or flourish. It it doesn't work, question everything: finger placement, card placment, timing... and figure out a way to do it. If you are persistent enough, you'll get it.
