what is the best place/book/dvd to learn good shock effects ?

Swami Mantra or Geek Magic, I would think.

I really wouldn't recommend Swami Mantra as much of it is INCREDIBLY dangerous. A GREAT place to start off is Geek Magic and/or Andrew Mayne's Shock FX. Two great sources for shock and geek magic.

Shock magic is OK, but some of it is fairly cheeze. Swami Mantra is for those who are unafraid and trust themselves and their judgement VERY much. Then there are seperate resource materials on effects such as the razor blades. Also look into some of the sideshow stunts that exist.

I have swami and it has dangerous stuff..
swallowing acids and what not..
I have shock FX..pretty cool stuff.

A lot of geek magic is somewhat dangerous, much like a lot of escapes. Before you perform it, try and find someone who has performed it before. Discuss it with them and gain from their experience. You can never be too safe when eating glass.
