X-Mas presents...

Hi, Ive been in magic for a long time (about 7 years), Im 15 and I dont know what to ask for Christmas... I love card magic, but I want to get started with coins. Ive thought about DRESSCODE, what do you think about it? What do you recommend me buying? Thanks a lot!

Well if you wanted to get started with coin magic, Buy Bobo's book. It's the bible. I am getting Metal by Eric Jones to help get into coins, so you might want to look into that. I don't have Dresscode, but it seems pretty sweet. Hope this helps.

First off, I have a strong belief that who ever uses "X-Mas" shouldn't be celebrating the holiday anyway. And secondly, my opinion is that Dresscode is neither coins or cards . I can't tell you how the effect is as it hasn't arrived yet. All I know is, that it's gotten great reviews and as soon as it comes, I'll be frequenting phone booths.

I know absolutely nothing about coins outside Sinful and I have a mean muscle pass.

For cards, I recommend The Card Magic of Le Paul. Not because I prefer books to dvds or vice versa, but because it's an incredible book. you'll have 20 people recommend Expert At The Card Table, but I don't. That's something you have to come to on your own when you feel ready for it. That's a personal journey. Royal Road To Card Magic has done me wonders as well. As far as dvd's, for cards, I usually get DVD's for the more advanced stuff that I need visual guidance on. Then of course there's my secret weapon when it comes to books on cards. Which I refuse to mention.

and as others have said, Bobo's is the place to start, it's only ten bucks. the first volume of Tarbell has quite a bit of coin magic too. another thing to look into is "In the beginning there were Coins" by Jay Noblezada, it's sold on Penguin Magic.

I think you're giving us to little information. What kind of card magic? Close-up? (Stand up or table?) Manipulation?.. Ye, you get the deal.

I'm not into coin magic, so I can't help you with that part, but I do a lot of card magic. But first of I wanna recommend 2 tricks that is neither of those two categories, one of them you've already mentioned.

DRESSCODE and Smoke. I don't have any of them yet, but I'm gonna buy them after all the good things I have heard about them. I usually don't use gimmicks, but I think these tricks are worth it.
Anyways, the Smoke gimmick is a very simple one and it's supposed to last for a really long time. If you haven't seen the trailer (You probably have) you should watch it. I have been talking to a lot of magicians about it and everyone says it's worth every penny.
DRESSCODE should also be one of those awesome tricks. I have been talking to Calen Morelli about it, and it takes maybe 5 dollars to make each gimmick (Calen, if you see this and I am wrong, please correct me. But I think that's what you said.), and the gimmick is supposed to last for about 3 months, which is very long since it's so cheap to make. Caseyrudd said that he was playing football while wearing it and it worked perfectly fine.
I'm going to buy both of those tricks.

When it comes to card magic, it really depends on what you're into. Since you have been into magic for 7 years, I guess you have Erdnase, but maybe the Indestructible Erdnase would be a good Christmas gift? Just an idea.

Are you only into magic or into flourishing also? If you don't already have the Trilogy I would recommend it. It's great.
If you're not into flourishing and want to start, I would suggest something like Genesis V1.

Another great tip would be to get the Daniel Garcia Projects. If I'm not wrong it includes all sorts of magic, so that could be a way of getting into more types of magic than just cards. And then of course you could just get playing cards. I bought a brick of Smoke and Mirrors V5 with my parents Christmas money...

Anyways, that's what I can come up with right now.

The worlds vaguest advice right there.... you may as well have said 'get some stuff'. Would have been just as insightful.

On the topic of the thread, I can honestly say I only do card magic (this was a conscious decision made last year after 15 years of dabbling in all areas) so I can only recommend card stuff. I recently got 'Dear Mr Fantasy' by John Bannon. Absolutely superb book full of totally workable material, none of which is that difficult. In one sense I want to say highly recommended, but on the other hand I kind of want know else to get it as it seems to be a bit of hidden gem...

Also, what's wrong with calling it Xmas? Not that I normally do anyway, just curious!

Bobo's for Coins, as is already said. Cards are tricky, depends on what you already own and what you enjoy about cards. If you're a move monkey there are books for that, if you prefer elegant tricks whose methods are simple...there are books for that as well.

A little more detail would make the advice given more appropriate.

Also, what's wrong with calling it Xmas? Not that I normally do anyway, just curious!

I would think it's like saying 'Happy Holiday's' instead of Merry Christmas...I had more typed, but I don't want the thread to go downhill with a well thought out history lesson on the Winter Solstice.

Basically it depends on why you're using it... but basically, it's out of respect and reverence to say Christmas. Christmas is a christian holiday. It's about Jesus Christ being born. Although there are many profound reasons for saying "X-Mas". Which I'm sure with a little research, one could find out the many different reasons for it. most commonly though, without thinking, it's taking the Christ out of christmas, making it a more secular holiday, which it's not. I'm not turning this into a religious debate, but it's like celebrating Hanukkah when I'm not jewish

Fair enough, I'm an atheist so I don't really see it as an issue, but I still say Christmas because unnecessary abbreviation annoys me! I just see it as lazy writing.

Anyway, as much as I could talk all day about religion, this is a magic forum... so yeah... buy the John Bannon book, it's amazing!
