Sponge is a good choice, I bought it, too and it served me well

and make sure you buy the 2 in ones. they are the best size for all situations.
I just started learning this. I figured that training with this would help aid me with slights and misdirection better. However, I've found that the 1.5 inch balls are better for my hands.
I also bought a dvd on it, but it doesn't seem nearly as good as the one suggested above. I think though, I will purchase the one suggested above and follow that instead.

trust me, get the 2 in ones, mind as well practice with the right stuff.
I actually owned the 2 inch ones first, but they don't quite fit my hands, so I bought the 1.5 inch ones.

yeah, you should practice with the 2 inch ones.
it's just like coin magic, the bigger the coin, the better but not too big like jumbo coins.
Actually, another reason why I use the 1.5 inch sponges is because I do a card trick with it. I have the spectator pick a card, have them put it back in the deck, I shuffle the cards, telling them that I love this trick because it's easy to find their card because (and I say this as I put the deck on the table) their card is sitting on a big red ball.
When I let go of the deck, a sponge ball is in about the middle of it. It expands to full size, pushing all the cards over the ball away except for the card that is directly on top of the sponge. The ball may roll a little, but when it does, it takes that card with it. And yes, it's their card. It's a great little visual.
I just can't do the trick as well with a 2 incher....
