    Amateur to beginner again

Tarbell is good. I'd recommend Mark Wilson's Complete Course. It has some cards, coins, bills, sponge balls, billiard balls, rope, mental magic, build it yourself magic, stage magic and lots more. For the $15 price, it is a great all-around resource. For playing card fundamentals, get the...

    Backstage

I would suggest some kids magic tricks that he can do once you show it to him -- ball vase, drawer box, imp bottle and some you can do for him color vision, disintegration chamber (with red ball), pencil coin penetration, nickels to dimes (or shrinking nickels). Here is a link to a shop that...

There is a great effect in Eric Mead’s Tangled Web where you borrow a $20 bill from the parents of an annoying child and make a oragami animal out of it. The trick is that the animal is made out of a $1 bill. ;) Give us a little more information about who you are performing for and in what...

What does absolute silence as reaction to a trick mean?

This brings up an important topic — how to guide your audience’s reactions. The first part is clarity of effect. I like to have the audience realize what is about to happen just before it does happen, have a moment to think about the impossibility and then to see the impossible actually...

What does absolute silence as reaction to a trick mean?

Typically silence indicates the audience doesn't know how to react or doesn't understand what happened. PK Touches (Midas Touch is Peter Turner's version) can be presented different ways. Often, it is viewed as a "trick" (like paper balls over the head) where the audience is in on part of...

College Application Essay - Topic is Magic

No, end it with what they are thinking. There are a lot of effects you can do this way. The ellipsis throughout the essay were for the writer to add his own thoughts. The effect I had in mind was a Jim Steinmeyer dictionary test and the object they would be thinking of would be a yellow taxi...

My recommendations: Art of Astonishment The Complete Walton (if still in print) Drawing Room Deceptions Anything by John Bannon that you can find in print (maybe not Mentalissimo and Destination Zero) One Degree by John Gustaferro The Aretalogy of Vanni Bossi A Book in English by Woody Aragon...

    Magic theory

The Magic Way is a very interesting book. Tamariz's "way" is to lead spectators to think there is a certain method, but then disprove that method. My objection is that the focus of the effect remains on the method. It is great thinking regardless of whether you agree with it. I found that...

    Guessing the color of underwear

Oops... forgot to actually close the thread. I guess it was worth it for @CWhite's suggestion for next week's SNC... or on the other hand, maybe not.

Need recommendations for tricks under $20

Wayne Dobson's WD-40 is available as a download for $20. This book isn't for the younger guys because his autobiography has some strong language in it. However, the effects in the book are a lot of fun.

Keeping focus / motivation whilst learning.

For me there is two types of learning. The first is learning knowledge. I know a lot of effects and methods that I don't use. To me that just adds to my ability to tweak effects that I do perform so that it suits my style and performance needs. The second type of learning is practice...

    Magic Hat and Jacket

This might be of some help:https://www.conjuringarchive.com/list/category/1882 It looks like a lot of it is in Professor Hoffman's work -- Modern Magic, More Magic and Later Magic -- and Tarbell (especially related to producing a rabbit from a hat). My recollection is that the hat isn't gaffed...

    Guessing the color of underwear

I think this thread has run its course. But before we put it behind us, I'll leave you with this: P.S. - That is a David Williamson effect that was only provided to Copperfield and I suspect that only Copperfield could get away with that presentation in the 1980s.

Like minded people in my area ?

Try Society of American Magicians. Otherwise the meetings just end up in an argument between the dwarves and the elves.

Is a close up pad worth it?

I have a close-up pad and only use it for Cups & Balls - mainly because most of the card effects I perform are stand-up. Ultimately, @ChristopherT is right. Decide how you are going to perform and practice how you will perform.

what is your favorite gambling routine

https://www.conjuringarchive.com/list/search?keyword=magician+vs.+gambler I'd recommend checking out the Hugard and Lyle version in Jinx (you can get free access through Conjuring Arts), the Brother John Hamman version (The Secrets of Bro. what is your favorite gambling routine

That is my favorite too. I got to see Woody perform it at a workshop and it was just wonderful fun.
