    Some advice for a beginner?

I'm guessing you mean Mark Wilson's Complete Course not Mark Lewis. If that is the case, that book is where you should start. Read it cover to cover. There are a lot of easy to learn effects there that you can come back to an learn. But more than that, by going through the entire book you...

    Lost and Found

I wanted to do Alan Wakeling's Cords and Coins. So I purchased four of Roy Keupper's large Chinese Coins. Well, I thought I purchased them. There were other effects that I was working on and when I got to that effect, I couldn't find the coins. They weren't in the bin of coin effects and they...

Seeking Direction For Trick Required In Theatre Production

Do you have the ability to change the effect? This one makes no sense - why does an egg shell turn into a jar and then into a different colored egg and then into coins? The only explanation is that it is an effect gone wrong an the magician keeps trying. From my knowledge and some quick...

Stepping up from closeup rings to full sized (10-12") without breaking the bank?

I've got a Prolines and I like them. They did take a while to get completed after I ordered them, but they are good quality. I think people say they are inexpensive compared to Owens rings. I've also got a set similar to the Mr. Magic (would have to dig to find the original box they came...

Best version of Play it Straight triumph

There really is just one version... John Bannon's version. Multiple versions of Dai Vernon's Triumph... but that is another question.

Anna D. Is underrated and deserves to be an AGT finalist

Agreed. Part of the being true to your style is branding. How you perform is your brand. If your brand looks like every other performer, then there is no reason to hire you - any generic magician would do. If your brand is unique, people will hire you and and pay a premium. Make it memorable.

    History and idea suggestions

The effect as described, using a borrowed deck with the magician not ever touching the cards (and with no pre-show or use of a stooge) is... well ... impossible. So, my question is what actually happens in your solution to this effect -- that is step-by-step what the spectator sees? I'm...

    History and idea suggestions

So there are a lot of effects where two spectators select the same card using different methods. There is a section in Eugene Burger's Mastering the Art of Magic where he talks about doing that effect with a method that makes the second spectator an instant stooge. The closest method I can...

Anna D. Is underrated and deserves to be an AGT finalist

I think that being true to your style and principles is more important than doing well on AGT... but that is just me. I'm sure the forgetting was scripted. Go back to my comments above.

Anna D. Is underrated and deserves to be an AGT finalist

Opens door. Puts down soap box. Stands on box and begins: So the audition was... mediocre. The instant deck was nice visually, but it was really just a throw-away. Too much going on with the cardistry and the magic wasn't that difficult. The timing on the card to lips was off and the fact...

    Dream job in magic?

So, it's a bit of combination of @010rusty's goals. I would like to be the person that designs the magic shows and hires and trains the magicians for an upscale cruise ship line. Yeah, I've even gone as far to develop three shows - an illusion / stage show, a parlor show and a mentalism show...

Quick Thinkin' and a Bit Of Luck

Never... just never have I had luck like that. Was the Joker R/S or just another card you stuck in to keep the deck box full? If my memory is correct most ID's don't have jokers.

Worst response to “I know how you did that!”

"That makes two of us." "Yeah, but the rest of these idiots don't." "OK, your turn..." [hand deck to spectator] "Where is your mask, Valentino?" "No, you don't." "Let me show you another one and see if you can figure that one out too." "Crap, I figured the magnets would fool everyone." "I paid a...

    Creating Set-Ups

John Gustaferro's Either Or is a great effect to do a set-up. You can also do a packet trick and start by saying "I'm going to do something that just uses part of the deck" and then pick out 9 or 10 cards. Then say, "Actually, I'm only going to use five cards..." and put the remaining cards...

    Best Tricks for Large Crowds

Roberto Giobbi had a book on stand up card tricks and Guy Hollingsworth's Drawing Room Deceptions was a reworking of card tricks for parlor. My suggestion is card tricks that don't rely on the audience seeing the cards. For card tricks: Cards Across (as you mentioned), Eric Ross's Election...

    Crazy one handed coin vanish

The main issue I have with all of these vanishes is that your hand movements do not seem natural. It only takes focusing on the unnatural movements to find the tell of your method. Pay attention to when your hands touch and to how long they are together. After the transfer, don't focus on the...
