Are any of the magic societies worth joining?

I always thought it might be cool to join one for the magazines (and bragging rights) but I’ve never been sure whether it was actually worth it or not.

I’ve heard good things about the IBM and SAM. Both have nearby rings so there’s that.

I also found the “International Society of Magicians” which just seems like some sort of video club type thing.

Anyone have any opinions on these? Is it worth joining?

I used to be part of a local magic club in Fresno. It was valuable to me at the time, but at this point in my career I don't know if I'd get much benefit out of being a member of any formal society. They do provide support in the sense of people to perform for and help critique, but there can also be a lot of back biting and politics in clubs.

I can't recall if it's IBM or SAM or both that have the performer's insurance option. If you're performing regularly, an insurance policy is important and they can help you get one cheap.

A guy I work with in my city said that when he joined the IBM, he felt like he had to give back to the magic community in some way after all it’s given him in his life. It inspired him to open a successful magic “academy” that hosts performances on Saturday nights, and has a weekly meeting with those who have graduated the initial classes. I guess it depends on how seriously you take it. If it really means a lot to you then it’s probably worth it.
