Hi everyone, for the longest I have been wanting an elegant close up pad. a nice big one maybe with a wood frame around it? But all of these cost so much money and Im not sure where to get them. So, I would like to make my own, but I don't know where to start. How do I go about creating a close up pad? What would I need? And once I have the materials, how could I make it? Is there any videos that tell you how? Thanks!

I'm certainly not an expert on this but have investigated for my own purposes. I found that a velour type fabric works well and mounted on a mouse pad rubber, or if you like softer, a bit of car headliner material. As far as adhesive, I don't know.

where do I get the mouse pad rubber, and how do I go about cutting it to size? I found a 20x27 sheet of paper velour. Im not at all sure how to even start making it.

Yes I did, but I can't have plywood under my mat, I need to have rubber under it ( similar to a mouse-pad) I would like to have a nice look on top of the mat but Im not sure how to go about doing so. Is this correct?

get the rubber and correct size, put foam in the middle of it and the felt on top? Does that work? Also can I replace foam with a nice texture? Im not sure what though

I have a nice mat that is just a soft rubber and the fabric on top (Np foam layer. It's quite nice. I looked into making my own because I wanted a larger surface. You will have to use Google to find where you can get the best deal on bulk rubber mats shipped to your area.

what type of rubber is best? Would I look up bulk rubber? Also, how do people get the nice wood frame around the mat?

If you were to put a wood frame around it it would be a magic surface, not a close up pad. Here, look at these, Surface: http://shop.dananddave.com/playing-cards/magic-surface.html Pad: http://shop.dananddave.com/aluminum-pad.html Basically, the surface is a large piece of wood with some of it cut out in the center were a large pad is glued down into it. if you notice on both the pad and surface, there is no rubber on the bottom. It is four little grippers in each corner.

Thanks! But for what Im using I need rubber on the bottom. Im making SSS by Shin Lim and I need the rubber to be on the bottom of the mat. I didn't know there was a difference between a magic surface and pad haha thanks!

I went to a place that relines the interior of cars. I asked for a scrap of headliner material the size I needed. The piece I needed was quite large, but he charged me $5. It's much softer than mousepad material, but still worked for what I needed.
