Hey everyone. I just finished an essay I wrote as part of an exam in one of my classes. The topic was to write about a story, novel, or film that has stayed with me since I saw it. I thought you guys might enjoy to read my essay! Here it is:

David Blaine: Street Magic
By: Rob Kingsbury

David Blaine is somewhat like an inspiration to me. He is an amazingly skilled magician who inspired me to push through the art of magic. I have been doing magic for four years and I owe a lot of thanks to David Blaine for firing up my love for the art.
I remember David Blaine’s very first special titled, David Blaine: Street Magic. This special was literally that – street magic. Before David Blaine, magicians had been accustomed to performing on stage, in coffee shops or in some sort of pre-arranged spot. David Blaine changed this. In his street magic special he went out onto the streets of New York and performed magic for all kinds of people, young and old alike.
Magicians hadn’t seen this style of performing before and it instantly became popular. I instantly wanted to learn magic. I was so amazed and fascinated by the impossible feats he was accomplishing that I wanted to learn to do it myself!
I remember one trick that he did that really stood out to me, caught me off guard and captured my undivided attention – quarter bite. This trick was simply a miracle (that is, when I first saw it. Now I know the clever, and just as amazing secret!)
What Blaine would do was simple; he would borrow a quarter from someone and have them sign it with a sharpie. He then would bring the quarter up to his mouth and bite off a chunk of it! Then, he made a face probably because of the terrible taste of silver (probably not the most ideal/healthy meal either!) He would then “spit” the end of the quarter in his mouth and it would INSTANTLY re-attach itself onto the half that was in his hand. Lastly, he gave the quarter back – still complete with initials and all.
David Blaine: Street Magic is a television special that I will never forget. It had a large impact on what I do today, that is entertaining people with magic in some of the same ways that David did on his very first special. For that, I owe a huge thank you to David Blaine.
This reminds me – a few weeks ago I was at a party for Houston area magicians. Myself and a few other teen magicians were talking to David Blaine’s head consultant, Danny Garcia. Long story short, David Blaine himself called Danny while we were all talking. Danny ended up handing me the phone and I got the chance to talk to David. I was at a complete loss for words. I almost couldn’t say anything because I was shocked at the fact that I was on the phone with David Blaine!
The ‘conversation’ didn’t last long – maybe one or two minutes – but later I realized that I had the perfect opportunity and missed it. I wish I would have been able to tell him thank you for inspiring me to take up the art of magic.
