Flash paper.

I'm thinking of directing a play that has a $bill passing over a candle and burning up. Open flames are not allowed on stage and someone suggested flash paper. I am not familiar with flash paper. I would appreciate any information you could provide regarding use etc. Thanks.

Flash paper is a paper that when ignited burns very quickly. You need an ignition source such as a candle to ignite it. It is like burning a regular piece of paper but quicker with pretty much smoke and no ashes. They do sell flash dollar, five dollar, ten dollar and twenty dollar bills.

Thanks. So it has to be ignited by something. Is there anything that could be used that is not an open flame? That's my challenge. No open flames on stage.

There are some sparker ignitor devices but I think your bigger problem is that the flash paper bursts up in a huge flame.

Chris Ballinger demonstrates some different flash products here so you can get a sense of how they work and what the look like:

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll keep looking or try to devise some way for the bill to disintegrate. Thanks again.

I've seen where it's suggested that even a hot surface could set it off. No details. If it didn't need a flame I'd be ok. Thanks for your suggestions. I'll keep looking.

The igniters that RealityOne referenced often use a piece of wire that gets super hot. No flame there. But the flash paper itself is a big fwoosh of open flame for about a second.

I may not have been clear on my problem. I'm looking for a way to ignite the flash paper without open flame. Cost is a definite factor. There would be 6 performances plus rehearsing the bit. Thanks.
