My Intro: First of all, I would like to thank everyone at Paper Crane for their generosity, love for their customers and for giving me this opportunity. Second, I thought I post a review for such an amazing effect. If you ever wanted to find a card in a unique and powerful way, you may enjoy Laced by Dan Hauss.
Trick: Laced
Created By: Dan Hauss
History/Story: Dan describes where the inspiration for the effect came from (an old effect from an old book), and how he applied it to “now” to make it better.
Effect: Dan Hauss, creator of Flow &, Sleeping Queen, hits the scene with another groovy twist.
Get this... Everyone digs a magician finding their card in spectacular ways. What about a card that visually impales itself on a tied shoelace? What if that SAME card matched the torn corner held by the spectator?
Laced is an extremely simple and powerful effect that anyone can do. It's 2009 and Laces are in. If you wear shoes, then you have your tools. Go perform Laced and melt some faces.
Notes: Detailed teaching of multiple performance methods
Acclaimed instructor Dan Hauss
Spectators freely choose their own cards - corner is torn and saved
Corner matches the 'Laced' card
Quick and easy setup
Cost: $16.95
Genre: Card Magic

Video and Quality:
Video: The video is split into sections (explained later). The video is also very well edited, put together, and produced. It covers everything really in-depth. The 80’s style music to the whole video was perfect and entertaining.
Quality: The quality of this video is pretty good. There were definitely no problems hearing or seeing what was being said or done. The audio is good; everything is clear and easy to watch.
Layout:
History- Explained Above
Needed Items- You’ll need two (2) items to make this effect work. You probably own both and also use them quite often, if not they can be easily purchased.
Set-Up- Dan tells you how to set-up the gimmick. It took me about 10-15mins. To set this up, because I was following along with the video, but after doing it a few times you’ll be able to do it in 2mins. You can set it up in the morning and walk the entire day with the set-up. It also creates a great illusion. You can only do this once with the set-up, but can reset it. Also, Dan teaches you how to perform this twice if asked again to perform or if wanting to perform for a later performance.
Performance One- Here the card is selected and “thrown” to have “penetrated” the shoelace. This one requires a basic sleight that maybe some aren’t comfortable doing.
Performance Two- Here instead of it being thrown, the card is mixed into the deck. Which he then springs the cards and the selected card now is linked onto the shoelace. There is a problem he hopes doesn’t happen during performing, but teaches a way to make it a little bit cleaner.
Performance Three- Same as Performance Two, but using a gimmicked card to make it a lot safer and cleaner to perform. Also, he mentions instead of springing the cards a fan can be performed to link the card.
Performance Four- This is a torn corner version. Where the card is selected, corner is torn, card mixed back in deck, and the cards are thrown at the shoelace, where the card is now linked. Probably the best version taught on the video. This is more of a convincer and yes it’s the actual corner.
Full Performance- Explained Below
Performances: In the beginning of the video you see the Demo Performances and at the end of the video there is a performance with Dan Hauss performing for Shaun Dunn, performing Performance Four (4).
Teaching: The teaching was superb. It’s very easy to follow along and very easy to learn from. I had no questions or problems I was confused about when the video was over. Everything is broken into steps and categories for the easiest possible learning experience, Direct, Clear and Easy to follow along. I was blown away for the first time in a long time. His patter, his personality, his handling; everything in my opinion was perfect. Dan goes over everything you need to know to be able to perform this. He does not leave any details out at all.
Method: WOW… This method for this effect is simply genius. It’ll fool you setting-up and performing this. Dan is an amazing and creative guy. Also, the method is really though out and when you see the method you’ll wonder how did he come up with that. This will work on most shoelaces.
Gimmick and Impromptu:
Gimmick- This effect doesn’t require a gimmick, but it’s more of a set-up.
Impromptu- Once set-up, the effect is pretty much” impromptu”.
Set-Up: See Above in Layout.
Dirtiness and Clean-Up:
Dirtiness- You do not really end that dirty.
Clean-Up- You also really don’t have to clean-up since the effect doesn’t leave you dirty.
Reset: Reset can be accomplished only taking a few minutes.
Angles: Angles here are not a problem, but if they are they can be easily managed and are very good.
Difficulty: On a scale of 1-10 (Ten being the hardest), I say it’s about a 4. This effect is ingeniously simple and practical.
Overall: This effect is insane, creative, visual and easy. It is something that I might use and perform. You can fool the spectator with this simple effect. It’s also a completely new and unique idea and effect. For the price and effect/ teaching you get in this effect is a great deal, I suggest you pick it up and try it out.
Score: 9/10
