I'm looking into starting flourishing, but I know basic fans, cuts, etc. Is this a good place to start? Looks like a great deal, featuring several of the cuts in Motion. I might save up to buy Dangerous, but Lethal looks pretty...well...lethal.

Any thoughts?

Lethal is one of the harder moves in Dangerous. I won't say it's the hardest cause there's definitely one or two more in there that's much tougher to master. I'm practicing Lethal myself and I find that d+M goes through it (along with other flourishes) pretty detailed. Multiple angles to learn from and he makes you pay attention to simple things such as finger positions to look out for. I highly reccommend Dangerous, whether it's Mystique or Motion (get both you won't regret it), the flourishes are sick, flashy and extremely beautiful while the tricks are just plain awesome.

If you were, definitely get it. It's only 15 bucks and has great flourishes on it - way more than Dangerous for way less money. It's always good to support the artist as well.

I don't know about the difficulty level though. You should be able to learn the easier flourishes and then move on to the harder ones. With practice, you'll eventually be able to do them. It's always hard to figure out where to go next after you have the fundamentals down, but I'm pretty sure this will be just as hard for you as any other DVD or download.

If this wasn't what you were talking about - get it anyways. It's awesome.

It has some easier flourishes on it as well as tricks, and it's only about 20 bucks.

Oh okay. This DVD completely slipped my mind. I aplogize for rambling about something totally out of point earlier. Anyways yes Lethal actually teaches almost 2 times more flourishes than Motion. However, if you get Lethal do not get Motion, only get Mystique, that is if you're interested in Dangerous. Why? Because the flourishes in Motion are taught on Lethal. Simple as that. Once again I stress that d+M's cardistry is extremely flashy and is taught very well, hope you have fun with it!
 
I would tend to recommend away from D&D and d+M to start off with for two main reasons...

1) The majority of flourishing releases are so heavily two-handed cut based that it's easy to get grounded in it as the only style of flourishing. I'm certainly not a HL person, but I think a flourisher who is adept at different styles is capable of more than someone who starts and gets stuck in two handed cuts.

2) There are easier things out there. I don't agree with the "throw them into the deep end" reasoning here, because quite simply, a difficult flourish learned when starting out will take you a year to learn. A difficult flourish learned after a year or two of study will take you three to six months to learn. I know which I'd prefer.

Because of those reasons (feel free to disagree, they're my opinions only), I would rather recommend the Xtreme Beginnerz DVDs and especially Jerry Cestkowski's The Encyclopedia of Playing Card Flourishes. Personally, I think De'vo is a massive douchebag with a small you know what and epic insecurity issues (not to mention he wishes he had a more German name... Dave...), but as a performer, I can't fault him and I think there's truth in his approach to manipulation.

This would be really good for beginners. At the same time I highly recommend Genesis if you really want to get those basic foundations down. My first DVD and I never regretted. Sometimes I still look back for some stuff I may have missed out. Paired with the Xtreme Beginnerz series they pack a punch.
 
Thanks guys! I would start with Xtreme Beginnerz, and I might if I can find a decently priced copy. I do want to get it at some point, but right now I'm not looking in that price range. I think it's about $50 with shipping. I'd get it if I could, trust me, as that would keep me busy for a while, and then Lethal. Madness looks good, and I'll probably get that later as well. And I know most of the stuff on Genesis, I'm very proficient in basic cuts/fans/etc. Lethal looks really nice right now. Thanks for all the help!
