Liam Montier is well known for his card work but is lesser known for the magic that he has created using other aspects. This ebook is his and Darren McQuade’s work on the Frixion pen. Using this pen you can perform a variety of different effects and Liam and Darren touche on a solid handful to get you going. Their additions to the genre are well worth taking a look at.
Visual Voodoo: 6 stick men are drawn on a business card. One is selected by a spectator and in a burst of flame only the selected stick man has vanished. You could also reverse the effect to make all of the others vanish aside from the selected stickman. This is a fun direct effect. It could be played up to be somewhat creepy. Multiple selection methods are taught and ideas are provided using different pictures and a different number of objects.
Get Off the Stage: 6 stick men are drawn on a business card and one is selected. A stick man is drawn in red on a piece of tissue. The tissue is lit on fire and the selected stick man has vanished leaving a red stickman in his place. This is a slight variation of visual voodoo. Liam offers a fun little story that gives a reason to his actions.
Celebrity Skin: In this effect a hole is punched in a card, it visually travels across the card and then heals itself, visually. This is a very clever use of the props here, it allows for a 2 phase effect which can be rare with this type of trick.
Twilight Buddies: A stickman is drawn at either end of a business card. The card is torn in half, with a flash of fire one stick man flies from one to the other piece of card. This is based on Paul Harris’ effect “Twilight”, take away the mirror and add fire and you get montier’s slightly more rock and roll version.
Trickshot: This pool themed trick involves 6 dots burning holes in a business card. The effect is very magical and stunning. You will “burn”, pun intended, though a lot of cards performing this but they do show you how to reset fairly quickly for the workers. I would have liked to see more illustrations for this effect to clear up the designs a bit more.
Windex: A playing card is drawn on one side of a piece of paper and a window on the other. The paper is folded a little heat is added and the card has magically jumped across the paper to the window. Liam refers to this as a portable card through window. I think this is a beautiful piece.
Full of Hot Air (Bonus): A deflated hot air balloon is drawn on a business card. When the magician applies some heat with a lighter the balloon is shown to have inflated. This could be a great effect for kids that will surely stun their parents as well.
Illusion Box: A mini-magician in a box is drawn on a business card and a card with a picture of a box is given to the spectator. With flash of fire the magician vanishes from one and appears in the box held by the spectator. This is a nice effect but is probably my least favorite in the book.
So that’s it! Most of the magic here is nearly sleightless and very easy. It should be noted that most of the effects taught do need flash paper, I didn’t explicitly mention which ones in the descriptions in order to maintain some obscurity.
