My effects and archiving

I have some of my own personaly effets, sleights, and variations that I made and I want to archive them in a book. I do eventually want to sell some of them, but for right now it would just be nice to have everything categorized for my own personal collection.

Some of the stuff I have done I haven't seen published elsewhere. But that doesn't mean that they are not out there. I guess I really just want to know if there is a way of telling if an idea is original or not. Is there a simple way of telling? I don't want to list my effects and routines to everyone and see if they know of similar things out there, cause some of them are similar effects or variations to things. What do the professionals do when they make something up? I don't want to have a d+M and Jay Sankey fiasco to deal with. :)

Ask your knowledgeable peers. Do your research. Unfortunately, there are no easy ways to do it, except to research and find all the variations of the plot you can find, and ask the right people. Ask, for example, Brad Henderson.

There isn't really a way of knowing for sure if something's already been invented. You just have to show it to a few knowledgeable and experienced magicians and see if they know of anything like it.

I'd start by asking people like Brad, Joshua Jay, etc. People in the "know".

Also check Tarbell, Mark Wilson's Complete Course, AoA, books that reference many effects.

Also utilize google and other search functions.

I bet it will be a long process but could be rewarding if you do have a lot of original material.
