First off, welcome to the site! :) Make sure to read the rules (although things are decently relaxed around here, it makes it much easier to browse the forums if rules are kept to!)

Second, stay away from tutorials on YouTube!!! I know it's tempting, we've all been there and been tempted, anyone who says otherwise is probably telling porkies (I'm not saying this is true for everyone of course)

Third, decide what you want to do in magic and what you want to get out of it. :D Do you want to work with coins, cards, ropes, illusions, mentalism, sponge balls etc.? Do you want to eventually get a paid job in a restaurant, or just take it up as a serious hobby?

Sorting these few things out will definitely help you on your way to becoming a great magician! Hope I've helped you a little there. :)

Welcome to the forums.

Right off the bat you probably aren't going to know what kind of magic you want to do. So do what so many have recommended before: expose yourself to as many different types of magic as you can. Play around with some card effects, mentalism, coins, etc.. Sooner or later you'll start discovering what you enjoy the most, and what works for you.

Post what you're interested in starting with now, here in this thread, and I'm sure we can all give you some good book and DVD recommendations to start you on your path.

Happy Magic.

Hi and Welcome!

If you were to try out every type of magic, i.e. coins, cards, mentalism, etc. it may be very expensive- buying DVDs and books of all of these types.

But if you already know waht type of magic you want to do (watchng David Blaine may mean you have an interest in cards?) I suggest watching "Born to Perform Card Magic" by Oz Pearlman, which you can purcahse at Penguinmagic. It's an excellent DVD teaching some of the best card effects there are, and loads of the important sleights (moves) that would be useful to a card magician.

From there, you can probably learn the basics and be well underway in your adventure of this art.

DO you mean stage illusions? Because most of us here are into more close-up type of style.

Coins you can get Bobo's Modern Coin magic, or for a visual Penguin's In the beginning There Were Coins.

Mentalism, I don't know anything about, but I think, to start you should get 13 Steps to Mentalism

Do watch the Theory11 Beginners video, found at www.theory11.com/beginners.php

Like many have said, please stay away from Youtube tutorials. They don't teach properly, most of the time.

Basically, remember to start from the very basics, don't rush anything, don't get too arrogant or full of yourself because you can finally do some little trick and rush out to show someone. Love the art, don't ever think of letting the art compliment you. You must compliment the art.

For now, as a beginner, enjoy the process of learning, have an open mind. Just be humble, start from the basics and work yourself up.

Enjoy, welcome here.

It didn't seem fake nor did it seem like some sorta video effects... I think..

Let's just say Criss Angel's building levitation and walking on water aren't effects you're going to be able to perform for a live audience any time soon.

If you believe they aren't camera tricks that leaves you with the conclusion that they are are extremely expensive grand illusions that are going to take a lot of time and money to create, set-up, and perform. If you believe they are camera tricks, then you have your answer already.

Happy Magic

Welcome to magic. :)

http://www.theory11.com/beginners.php Watch this (A poster above me already said this.)

To start out I highly recommend a few things. I'll list them here. They may bore you a little bit so I'll post some beginner entertaining stuff too. ;)

1. http://www.theory11.com/1on1/AaronFisher/ Card Fundamentals Part 1: Aaron teaches the basics as though you never held a deck of cards before. I recommend it as it's only 5 bucks. You can probably find that from looking under the couch for some change =P

2. the book The Royal Road to Card Magic This is a great book. It will teach you many many sleights. It will teach some tricks too, but I generally don't like much of of the tricks. It will teach you many things though that will make your life a lot easier in the future. They also have this book on DVD too with a teacher, I never got it so I can't recommend it, but I do know that the book helped a lot.

3. http://www.ellusionist.com/category/dvd+training/brad+christian.do How to do Street Magic by Brad Christian. This doesn't teach many sleights or stuff with cards (well, a bit of cards), but if you have some other stuff and you are bored and feel discouraged... open this DVD up. :D Ashes on Arm is my favorite, I am actually going to do that later on for a few people later on today. Some of the card stuff is also self working and requires little to no practice.

3. http://www.ellusionist.com/category/dvd+training/brad+christian.do Get the Ninja or Crash Course series DVDs. Great stuff, a little boring... but I recommend it. The Crash Course series will teach you something called an ambitious card routine. VERY powerful stuff.

Now, these things may be a bit boring... even though the effects are great, you probably will want some stuff you can perform with only a bit of practice, I'll recommend some stuff to you now that is entertaining and you can do with just a bit of practice.

1. http://www.ellusionist.com/product/...chin/criss+angel+-+signed+coin+in+soda+can.do
Sinful or Quarter Through Soda Can. THIS GOT ME MY REPUTATION AS A MAGICIAN IN MY SCHOOL! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! VERY VERY POWERFUL!

2. http://www.ellusionist.com/product/dvd+training/wayne+houchin/stigmata+by+wayne+houchin.do
After I stopped doing magic for a while then got back into it... THIS GOT ME MY REPUTATION BACK AS A MAGICIAN IN MY SCHOOL 2 YEARS AFTER I DID SINFUL!:p Fairly easy too.

3. http://www.ellusionist.com/product/dvd+training/justin+miller/factory+sealed+coin+in+bottle.do
You won't believe this one.

4. http://www.theory11.com/tricks/witness.php Witness, so easy to do it will make you cry.

5. http://www.theory11.com/tricks/panic.php Aaron Fisher is the man. This again.... very easy.

6. http://www.theory11.com/tricks/control.php Don't get this until you have a reputation set as a magician. Once you have better people skills and presentation, this will come easy.

----------------------------------------------

Now I'm telling you... DON'T BUY EVERYTHING YOU SEE ON THIS LIST! Get 1 or 2 things tops at a time. You don't want to go spending all your money. I recommend getting one thing I listed as semi boring and another thing I list as entertaining. You will love all this stuff. I promise. If you stay with magic, you will get to know yourself better, meet new people, and have a skill other people wish they could have. People will think you have been doing magic for years if your perform just a few of these effects.

Good luck, feel free to send me a Private message on here or send me an IM on aim (my screen name is in my signature).

WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!

First, as people have been saying, have a look at the Begginers Section.
Get a pack of cards, as they are the basic prop magicians have. Most people use Bycicle Playing Cards.. The link i offered you has them in sets of 3.Also tryout a few 1-on1's.
You also might wan't to check out Ellusionist. Alot of people are really going to hate me for reccomending something like this to you, but im going to do it anyway. Try out How To Do Street Magic,Crash Course In Card Magic 1 and Crash Course 2.

If you are into Coins then try the Coin Section at Ellusionist.

I canno't reccomened any stage magic, as i am into close up, but there is a Stage Section at The Merchant Of Magic (UK). That should be enough to get you started, but feel free to Privet Message (PM)me if you would like any more help.

REMEMBER: PRACTISE BEFORE YOU SHOW ANYONE ANY TRICKS!!!!!!!!!!. I still have trouble practising before showing anyone, but i just have to force myself to practise. Try doing it in front of a mirror, video camera, or wall. Wayne Houchin will expalin why in the Begginers Video.

Have fun practising magic, and, eventually, showing it off.

Felix

Hey there and welcome to the forums :).

Everything has pretty much bee covered but, I thought I'd chime in as well. If you have any questions or concerns about aything at all you can contact me personally or any of the other staff or moderators, that being Jack The Magician, The Dark Angel, JonRaiker, and any other staff member or knowledgeable forum member. There is many.

I see there's been numerous suggestions to DVD's and they are a great visual learning tool. But, a lot of the "roots" of magic persay derived from many old books. Check out Lybrary for a huge amount of magic notes, books and more. Also if you have a Chapters Book Store in your area search on their website under the terms "erdnase" and "Hugard".

Welcome to the community and enjoy your time in magic,
