Here's a fun excercise. Say you've got a magic idea that you want to bring into fruition. Here's whatcha try. Make the most intricate way possible to do the trick. You know have the basis of your trick. Now Simplify the working one step at a time. This is much easier than just arriving at the solution out of mid-air. Also, you are liable to come up w/ all sorts of variations or possibly new effects.
