This year: I put a lot of my "new magic" goals on hold, with a greater goal of working some real "magic" on my personal finances. It's been tough - the Internet overflows with temptations. "Soon, my pretties." I tell them. "Soon."
I also read Unreasonable Hospitality, by Will Guidara. It's a book I think every magician would benefit from. Scratch that: every person. It's just wonderful, when you discover a writer who's speaking a language you've felt your entire worklife. To have someone explain it, deepen it, widen the possibilities... man. I honestly can't think of any discovery that has broadened my scope of what magic is, and what magic can be, than that book.
Next year? My goal is simple: I'm done with heroes. I'm done trying to cop moves and presenetations by the folks I admire so much, trying to make their work into my own. Next year, it's all me. My ideas, my patter, my performance. I would rather be a failure as myself, than a success as someone else.
I wish you all the best in what's left of this year, and even better in the next one!
