Telling Magicians You Are Interested In Magic

A lot of it is a timing thing. I've had some similar experiences. I actually sat next to Mac King for a whole show and couldn't strike up a conversation. At IMX we I sat around a table with Chris Kenner and Lennart Green, the whole time I just wanted to talk with Chris but I couldn't figure out what to say! Finally a kid half my age came up to him asking about his pop out move. It was a great way to get talking with him.
After a show they probably want to move on, go home or take a break. I don't know if that's the place to get talking to them about magic. I think a way to get to their attention would be to just stand out in the magic community. It would take time and perseverance but it's the most surefire way to do it :/

I don't generally treat 'famous' people any different than I treat anyone else. They're all just people and from what I understand it can be quite refreshing for them when people don't make a big deal about them. Sometimes it's nice to just be normal.
So other than my normal social anxiety, I just talk to them like normal people.

No not really. I don't fan boy, and I really kind of frown upon the idea of doing so. I wouldn't treat anyone at work special when I talk to them and I really don't view anyone in the magic field, even Copperfield or Kenner as anyone other than just another co-worker. This doesn't mean I won't show someone like Chris a healthy amount of respect, because they've earned it for sure. But I won't fanboy on them.
Get the book "How to Talk to Anyone" by Leil Lowndes. It has great practical advice on, well, how to talk to anyone.
