Tips on non - stock flourishes?

When I sat non stock I mean things like an originally flourish you might buy from the wire or here or ellisionist - I always seam to give up - also do tally Ho fan backs have a thicker stock than circle backs?

The circle backs and the fan backs should have the same linoid finish.
Also, I am still a little confused on what a "non-stock flourish" is.
