I have planned two effects for my school talent show, Wordsmyth by Francis Menotti, and a rope routine, Fiber Optics by Richard Sanders. There are two performances set 3 days apart. Which routine should I peform first, and why?

Fiber Optics is a really good choice if you are into rope magic, I've done a magic show in my school couple years ago I recommend making it simple, prediction routines are good on stage, draw a playing card on a big paper A4 is good enough and put it in an envelope, and do it in your style,

Dresscode is my favourite trick of all time if you already have the DVD or you can get it and make the gimmick before the show, go for it, I do a lot of stuff but people remember me just for that trick it's so powerful, and you don't have to just do a shirt change, make it a routine by your own style, lastly here is the video from my show if you are interested, (You may not understand a word because it's not in English, but you can see the tricks) and good luck with your show :)

It depends on how confident you are with both routines; patter and mannerisms included. Both are great effects. I'm more familiar with 'Optics and I think that, only going off the effect, would be a great day 1 go.

If I have this right, your talent show is comprised of 2 'rounds' set three days apart. I think you need something strong and visual to get you in the door and 'Optics can do that. Day two's Wordsmyth. Your foot is already in the door. Everyone knows that 'you're the magician'. So knock 'em dead with Wordsmyth. It's very spectator involved, but the effect is a bit...quieter and not as in your face than Optics. If that makes sense.

In short, use Optics to build rapport. Use Wordsmyth to put you ahead in day two.

If I have this wrong, let me know. But I think it would help if you clarified how the mechanics of your talent show works. Such as: why is it split up? Is the day 1 a qualifying round? Are there prizes up for grabs?

Details.

There's two rounds, I have the qualifications round planned already and its not in front of everybody. Thats all set and taken care of. The actual performances, there are two of them. The first performance is everybody who made the qualifications, and the second is the final round.

I was thinking to do fiber optics first because it is so visual. What types of routines though would be best for the final rounds? I feel like i threw in wordsmyth "just because." Im not asking for specifics because you dont know my entire repertoire, but what are some qualities that would make for a killer final performance?
