Whats the best thing to attract a crowd?

I was just wondering what would be the best way to attract a crowd when it comes to street magic? Should you do something big and flashy and simmer down or do something small and dull and build up the heat?

Well, when I'm out with friends, I usually have one of my friends freak out and cause a spectacle for a really simple trick. This usually gets a pretty big crowd really fast.
