When do you make the switch?

Here's something simple yet interesting. At what point does a person stop being considered a nosy layman, and starts to be considered a magician? Once they're interested? Once they own some content? Once they have a closet full of magic props? What do you think?

Tricks and props are tools. What is really generating amazement is the performer. Once you start to think like a performer, and you understand the principles that lead to entertainment and amazement, you are a magician.

People reading books to understand how it's done, with no intention to dedicate the time and effort is takes to polish a trick, are nosy laymen. They only wish to know how it's done.

Still, we need to remember that we all started there.

I would agree, I think it's about the performers attitude more than anything. Once they start performing for people (rather than just playing tricks or bar bets), their attitude changes. A young kid can perform at birthday parties and is far more a magician than a person using magic tricks to fool and trick others for a laugh, or the one who knows a ton of things but never performs for anyone.

I don't think a true understanding of that attitude shift can come unless you are performing for others (friends, family etc).

I used to ask the same question about when can a magician call themselves a 'master' magician.
