I'm in a production of The Secret Garden this winter. I play Dicken who is a bit ofa magical fellow. My director wants me to be able to have a small plant grow from dirt in my hands. Does anyone know of an effect like this? I think it seems pretty simple to do; I could probably rig something up but if there is a product out there I'd like to know. Thanks for any help!

I've never seen a hand-held version of this effect; usually, it's done in a medium to large sized pot. Also, it tends to be expensive. And involves oranges, with an item appearing inside of one.
As for just a small plant growing...I've never heard of such a product, but I've never really looked.
fake plant, in your sleve, tied with some fishing string, can be attached to your head somehow, or just use your other hand to pull it up, magically ya know
and it depends what kind of plant
if its like a vine of sorts, thats not hard, but like a tree or something, that would require a little more thinking, but i think it could be the same concept

Hmm, if it's like a tree or something, I remember from Kindergarten we would roll and cut up some newspaper, and when you pulled the one end of it, it looked like it was a tree that was blooming. Perhaps you could Google that and see what you come up with. And, of course, instead of actually pulling up on it, you could use some fishing line, like was mentioned. 
Edit: Also, I would suggest using something other than newspaper. Perhaps even construction paper. (I'm assuming people are going to be far enough away, and not expecting miracles, so that this type of prop would be fine)
