That complete depends on what you like. I prefer silver dollars as they work better with my hands. And, as stated by Chris Kenner, they are more visual. I have gotten some from a bank, but they definitely don't always have them. They usually have half dollars which can certainly work for you. A number of people in coin magic use them.
There are some other coins out there that will cost you some money at a coin shop or elsewhere such as Morgans silver dollars and that like. Homer Liwag uses some nice ones from his set made by Jamie Schoolcraft.

soft coins will change your view in coin magic forever, but it's a bit pricecy. If you really what to get into coin magic, soft coins are the must have.
Just head down to the local coin shop and get a few Half dollars. They're cheap and pretty decent sized for most people who are starting out.

Banks often have half-dollars as well.
Ask your parents if they have any half dollars or old silver dollars you can work with. If that's not an option, banks will trade equal value when they have the coins, i.e. two Kennedy Half dollars for one dollar.
It's not a guarantee they'll have them, but it's cheap.
Also buying effects from magic dealers will give you the coins you need.
You could also practice with quarters. I find that my ability to classic palm quarters and nickels helps when I don't have any coins on me, just borrow and go. It's a lot of work, but it pays off in the end.
Half dollars are a great size to facilitate a lot of coin moves. if you have huge hands (doubltful) dollar coins are good. It also depends on the trick you're doing, and the venue you're doing it in. But i generally use half dollar sized coins. They are the same size as english pennies so you're set for copper silver routines. Barber half dollars (same size as kennedy halves) are really good if you are doing any routines where the coins are sliding around eachother secretly because barbers a usually pretty worn down and don't make much sound when they slide over eachother. They're also quite pretty. But not necessary at all. I've never owned any walking liberty halves so i can't really say much about them other than that they're really pretty. I don't know if you can find them soft or not (soft=smooth. oh and soft coins are not a must have as that guy with the long name said).
