The pivot is rather easy, just keep the packet small, maybe 5-6 cards when you are starting out, big packets are harder to do. After a while, your fingers get used to it and you can do it much easier. Just take your time, it doesn't really take THAT long, people go on about months or even years...

I've been doing this for ages, though I did it as a double shuffle, if you do the bridge from a weave from the corners it'll spread the cards sideways so you can do another bridge horizontally. It's kinda cool, though totally pointless because it takes forever and only really does 1 actual shuffle.

Even when you're awesome you'll still drop cards, just not as often, you everntually reach a stage where if you keep things controlled you'll never drop cards. I only really drop cards when I'm trying to go too fast, being a retard, or doing arials and such that you can never get passed...

First time I did a LePaul spread, the cards ended up springing into the air. It's not really practice, as it is building up the right muscles in your hand, because the stronger it is the more controlled you can do the spread and the smoother it comes out. Just takes time :)
