I just did a Christmas party too, for and adoption agency. Lots of kids about 50 of them. I noticed some of the kids enjoyed some of the card tricks I did for the adults. Did you notice that at your party? The favorites upon the kids though were sponge balls and presto printo.

This line hit me in a little bit of a disappointing way, and I do believe it is true. There are too many magicians that care more about selling there trick more than the actual beauty and originality of the routine.

Juan Tamariz has a nice psychological force in his book Five Points in Magic. It is very brief, but I HIGHLY recommend the book to EVERY magician from a beginner to professional.
